Cabinets - Choosing The Right Finish

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 193

The finish on your kitchen cabinets can make a big difference in your home's first impression. It can also affect how easy your cabinets are to use and maintain. There are many different finishes available from which to choose, including natural wood, paint, stain and glazing. The right one for your situation depends on your cooking style, the existing décor in your kitchen, and your cabinet material.

Natural Wood If you have solid wood cabinetry with an attractive grain and you don't have to deal with children, poor kitchen ventilation or splatters, then natural wood may be the best option for you. Simply finished with just a thin coat of oil or wax, these cabinets let the beauty of their material shine through. In a kitchen where stains or other cleanup problems are a higher risk, coating natural wood cabinets with a few layers of polyurethane or shellac can produce a slightly shinier look that's still attractive. Just remember that many varnishes will produce a slightly yellower tone as they age.

Paint Painting your cabinets is the old-fashioned solution. It works well for any cabinetry that has a finish to which the paint will stick, but it might not be the right choice for cabinets with an artificial wood surface. You can choose traditional country white in a gloss finish that repels almost any stain, or go for something a little more adventurous. Bold tones to accent neutral walls and furnishings make a great statement in many kitchens. Paint may not be the best choice for solid hardwood cabinets, however, as it covers their best features. Polyester finishing is a paint variation that produces a smoother, more durable surface.

Stain Pre-existing wood cabinets that are looking a little worn can often be rejuvenated with a touch of stain. This finish requires removing the previous finish and disassembling the cabinets. It also allows you to revive faded colors, boosting cherry and walnut tones. You can even make over your cabinets completely, turning pine to oak with just a few strokes of the brush. After the stain has dried completely, finish the cabinets as you would natural wood, using polyurethane, shellac or another varnish.

Glaze Glazing is a finish that falls somewhere between paint and stain. It's nearly transparent, but it adds a touch of colors to wood that might be turning dull and unattractive. Unlike stains, glazes don't require an additional layer of varnish or other protective material on top. They also come in a wider range of colors. You can choose to glaze your cabinets using a natural wood tone or add a touch of gold, green, red or even blue. Glazes work well to add depth over existing stained or painted cabinets. Since the glaze lies more thickly in the depressions, it produces an antiqued look that works well in many old-fashioned or vintage kitchens.

No matter which cabinet finish you choose, it's important to make sure that your cabinets and all their hardware are in good condition before you change their look. Inspect each cabinet carefully. If you see chips, cracks or other problems, repair them or replace the damaged area before refinishing. The result will be reliable, attractive cabinets that serve you for many years to come.
