The Development of Security Devices

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 194

Both the TSA and the DHS offer careers for people interested in science, technology, and ideas. The TSA does research to make screening and explosives detection more accurate. This is because terrorists are continuously working to improve their technology so that explosives they hide are hard to detect. Hiding small explosive objects in a bag of coffee grounds is one prime example.

This ever-changing danger means that research and development (R&D) must go on. Both agents work with businesses and other governmental agencies to improve detection of weapons and explosives. Businesses make and improve detecting machines. TSA engineers test out these machines at airports, rail yards, seaports, and on various modes of mass transit.

Sometimes TSA engineers who work with the R&D staff ask for a certain type of tool. They might ask for a system that can find even small explosives in a suitcase. Likewise, they need to know how fast the latest detector can find little objects hidden in a bag. The engineers may also decide how a bomb fragment should look like when passing through an X-ray monitor. Maybe it should appear a certain color so it can be distinguished easily, say red.

Modern devices must also work well under different temperature ranges whether used indoors or out. In addition to studying new technology, engineers attend conferences and seminars held by the TSA. They study the equipment designs of many manufacturers and make decisions about each one.

Questions are also asked as "Will this suit our needs?" or "How expensive is it to produce?" If the unit produced is rather expensive, will the extra cost improve passenger safety significantly? How long does it take to operate the unit? If the device is extremely complex, does it take too long time to operate?

Engineers also develop standards and rules governing the equipment. This includes the types of materials, part sizes, and how and where the devices should be tested and a lot of other jazz. Then they find out how much the new equipment will cost. These and hundreds of other problems must be addressed ASAP.

TSA engineers work with the people responsible for airport security to find out what their needs are. Once this info is gathered, the engineers talk to the science and technology staff at the DHS to find out what is the most up-to-date technology available. Finally, they write out what the security system needs to do.

After that, the TSA engineers meet with the FSD's and the DHS science and technology people to discuss matter further. It takes several meetings to work through the design. Of course the machinery must be of high quality to ensure that they don't break down easily. Next, the DHS finds a company to design the system, called an outside contractor. It can take months for a new system to be designed.

Once manufactured, the new device is tested by the DHS laboratory. Once the testing team is satisfied with the results, the TSA takes it to the appropriate facility to begin the pilot program.

For those of you interested in a career with the TSA, you must have a degree in one of several areas of engineering. Such areas may be mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering as well as other fields. Also, several years of related work experience may be needed. They must be familiar with physical science, computer science, math, and security technology. For heaven's sake, that's a lot of training! An engineer makes anywhere from $55,000 to $100,000 per year.

The TSA is coming out with new security products all the time to protect the public. For more information on security devices and Walk through metal detectors then please visit us.
