The Benefits and Drawbacks of Identity Cards

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 120

As the name implies, identity cards are used to identify or distinguish a particular employee. Identity cards may contain details such as reference numbers, names of the cardholders or their contact details. Some even use a neck lanyard to hold the ID in place. Other information included may pertain to the type of service the company provides.

Businesses may also ask ID card printers to contain other additional information such as the title, rank or position of the employee, the name of the company, their official logo, address and other contact details. They also inform other people that the cardholder has a clean record, is trustworthy and is qualified or authorised to handle certain matters, such as a driving license for example.

Regardless of the type, look and structure of the card, it is best to know about their benefits and drawbacks before using them. This would allow businesses, corporations and individuals to make use of their privileges and to prevent unwanted circumstances related to the card from happening. Read on to find out more about the benefits and drawbacks.

Various Benefits

The benefits of having ID cards primarily involve easy application for certain situations, positions and placements such as opening a bank account, getting a job or even getting onto an aeroplane. They are also very beneficial when it comes to paying utility bills and entering the building of a particular company. Without ID cards, people would be missing out on so many things since there is no proof of their eligibility to do these things. This is why both private institutions and the government provide ID cards to individuals when necessary.

In addition to their benefits, ID cards are also very useful when it comes to emergency situations. These include easy identification of the cardholder who has been involved in an accident and immediate communication with his or her family members, relatives or friends. Schools, medical institutions, corporations and other organisations benefit from having an identity card because it allows them to keep their vicinity free from intruders, while also giving the students or employees proper identification.

Potential Drawbacks

However, ID cards also have their potential drawbacks if not managed correctly. One of the most known drawbacks when having an ID card is identity theft. This is an offense and a crime wherein a person steals personal and confidential information about the cardholder and tried to pretend to be them, usually to carry out criminal activities, or to steal money from the owner. This could happen if the cardholder carelessly threw away an old card without cutting it into half for example. A stranger could pick that card up and use it to hack into the bank account of a particular person who used to own the card. They may also get other information such as the address of the ID cardholder which can lead to burglaries. This is an incident that no one would want to experience.

To prevent this from happening, cardholders must be extra careful when it comes to keeping and disposing of their ID cards. Companies and institutions must make it clear that it is the cardholder himself who is responsible for whatever happens to their ID cards. Therefore, they should always keep an eye on their identity cards and make sure that they are secure at all times. If the owners notice that one of their cards is missing, they should immediately contact the police and file a report. When they do this, their banks, companies and other institutions would be immediately notified. This would prevent the stranger from stealing the identity and money of the cardholder.

Identity cards are very advantageous not only for corporations and institutions but also for the individuals. ID card printers are very popular because of the importance of having an ID. These cards allow people to do certain things such as open a bank account, driving legally and applying for jobs. Although they are very useful and beneficial, having one is a big responsibility. The cardholder would always be liable for their cards. Therefore, appropriate keeping and caring for the cards should be observed. In order to prevent losing it, buying a neck lanyard may help.
