The 3 Keys To A Successful QR Code Advertising Campaign

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 139

The key to a successful QR code marketing campaign lies in three fundamental things:

1. Offering something of value to your customer. 2. Having a mobile friendly website. 3. Placement of the QR code.

1. First of all, you need to decide what you are going to offer the customer. A discount coupon? Maybe something for free? Whatever it is, it must give the customer an incentive to spend their money with you. If what you are offering is a download, such as a coupon, make sure it is small, less than 20kb is ideal. This is because downloading something on a smartphone usually costs money and can sometimes be slow, depending on the internet connection. Therefore, it could be handy to specify the download size to help persuade the customer to download it.

2. For the customer to access your special offer, they will more than likely use a smartphone to scan the QR code, so you will need to have a mobile friendly website for them to navigate to. Mobile friendly websites are different to standard websites for a few reasons. They need to have minimal content so they can download to a smartphone browser quickly and they also need to have a layout that is easy for the customer to read. The page layout should be such that it fills the screen with minimal scrolling, definitely no left-right scrolling, up and down only. Make sure any buttons are clearly visible and big enough to press with a thumb without zooming in. Also, the code should navigate directly to the special offer. The customer doesn't want to hunt through the website looking for your special offer, they will leave very quickly, probably gone forever.

3. Placement of your QR code is important. Make sure that the code leads to the correct web page before you spend money on printing. It pays to get someone else, using a different smartphone other than your own, to test the code. If you are outsourcing the printing, if possible, get the person doing the printing to check the code. If you are using a static sign with a QR code (such as a billboard, or a poster in a coffee shop) ensure that there is internet access where the code is placed, either wireless or 3G, preferably both. You may also want to include some basic instructions on how to use it too, such as "This is a QR code. Download a free scanner from your preferred app store then scan the code to receive a special offer." At the very least, you need to explain what the code does, such as "Scan this code to receive a 40% discount on your next purchase."

QR codes are not limited to just directing people to a website, there are many other ways they can be used to engage potential customers, some of which are explained in the free e-course How To Use QR Codes. Another good resource is Marketing Using QR Codes. However, if you follow these three key points, you will be well on your way to creating a successful QR code advertising campaign.
