Signs With Arm Brackets: Selecting the Correct Size for Your Sign

February 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 180

What's an arm bracket? Imagine extending your arm out from your body so that it's level with your shoulder. Then imagine hanging a sign from your arm around where your elbow is. The sign could be double-sided if you were to stand perpendicular to the road, advertising your company as people travel past you in both directions.

Your arm is a stand-in for an arm bracket, which are typically made out of metal. These types of brackets are fastened to a single post, or to the side of a building, making them highly visible as people approach your retail or office location. They come designed relatively plainly up to very ornate with swirls of metal on the upper side of the bracket. This type of bracket not only holds the sign in place, but complements the sign design.

You can get them custom-made, although there are many styles that are ready-made from which you can choose. What's important, though, is determining the size bracket that will best fit your sign. You want one that extends beyond the width of the sign so that your sign looks comfortable in that space, and not crowded as though it's wearing clothes that are too small.

Often, there is a point that the bracket comes to on one end (the one opposite the side that screws into a post or wall) that is decorative-it may be a ball or a modified point. On the other end of the bracket, you need to leave space between the sign and the post or wall, so when the sign panel sways in the wind it doesn't hit against its support--the post or wall.

Here's a guide that will help you size your bracket correctly when you go to order it:

Width of Bracket - Width of Sign

20" - Signs up to 14" wide

26" - Signs between 15" - 20"

30" - Signs between 21" - 24"

36" - Signs between 25" - 30"

42" - Signs between 31" - 36"

48" - Signs between 37" - 42"

53" - Signs between 43" - 47"

58" - Signs between 48" - 52"

63" - Signs between 53" - 57"

68" - Signs between 58" - 62"

As the width of a sign increases, the diameter of the arm is increased to ensure safe handling of the weight. This is done automatically by the bracket manufacturer. Consult a sign professional to ensure your bracket will safely support your new sign.
