How to Service Your Own Caravan

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 187

If you have a caravan, it needs to be serviced by a mechanic regularly, just like a car. Book it in for a service in the winter, if possible, to avoid mechanics getting overbooked when the season starts.

But a lot of caravan servicing can be done by you, like checking your tyre condition and tyre pressures. Don't forget to check the spare tyre. It's advisable to change the tyres after 7 years. Check the road lights, tighten wheel nuts.

The coupling head at the front of the caravan needs oiling up, so it is easy to connect to the car.

You need to get the annual servicing of electrical appliances and gas boilers and heaters done by a qualified expert, preferably a member of the Approved Workshop Scheme (AWS). Static caravan owners will need to drain off the water in the gas boiler and loosen off the pipes inside the boiler.

You need to get the annual servicing of electrical appliances and gas heaters done by a properly qualified expert, preferably a member of the Approved Workshop Scheme (AWS).

Static caravans have to get a certificate to prove to the campsite manager to say it has been completed. Some council run caravan sites insist on it and threaten eviction if you do not comply with this rule.

In the spring, turn on the water supply first, then the gas cylinder. Ignite the gas boiler and check to see if the flame is blue. If it is yellow, call a specialist right away.

Preparing for the winter:

When parking your vehicle for the winter, leave the handbrake off, or it will seize and rust the drums. It's also good to take out the leisure battery and recharge it once in a while.

It's very important to turn off the water supply and drain the pipes by opening all the taps till they are completely drained. You can put some anti-freeze into the toilet cistern and the toilet pan, sinks and shower. Lots of people experience problems with burst pipes, it is vital to drain off the water to avoid this serious problem.

Sterilise the water system and replace the water filter.

Disconnect the gas cylinder and store safely upright in a garage. Turn on gas appliances and check to see if the flame is blue. If it is yellow, call a specialist.

Test the smoke alarm.

Doors and windows have to be oiled up over the winter, in case of frost, otherwise you could take the door off its hinges when opened after the winter.

Make sure that any rooftop windows are well shut, in case of water coming in and damaging the flooring.

Disconnect TV-aerial in case of winter storms or heavy snow fall.

Checks for dampness are important. Air your caravan regularly, open all the doors and windows for a few hours to let the air circulate. Remove bedding and cushions and store them in your house.

Close all the blinds. Clean out your fridge and leave the door open to prevent mould from growing.

Check air vents for fallen leaves and other debris. Make sure they are clear.

Careful caravan servicing will ensure many years of carefree caravanning.
