Cheap Thrills in New Zealand

April 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 144

New Zealand is certainly most well known for its gorgeous natural settings and we won't ignore those in this article but we are going to explore a few things that are fun but affordable for most travelers. This is more than just checking out a beach or mountain here or there, but actual activities to take part in so you can get the most from your journey. The diverse landscapes offer a ton of things to do packed into this small island nation so it can be easy to get caught up in it all, missing out on some really awesome things that you'd regret missing if you knew about them.

Starting in Auckland, New Zealand's most populated city, we can check out a few low-cost super fun things to do here. The Auckland Art Gallery has free admission and contains some Maori (New Zealand's native people) artwork that must be seen to be appreciated. Have a lunch at Sky Tower, a rotating tower restaurant with spectacular views of the city. The restaurant can be a bit pricey but there is a cafe downstairs, and be sure not to miss the sky jumpers - there is even a 30 seconds to jump warning sign so you know when to watch. Another fun option that is a bit more pricey but still under $50 is Rainbow's End, probably the best theme park in New Zealand.

For a little change of pace to get back to the natural settings New Zealand is famous for, we can take a trip to Bay of Islands. Many famous native Maori were born in this area and it is famous for its fishing or sailing opportunities. The first permanent town was built here and there are some old wooden buildings to check out too. Taking a boat ride is a popular choice here, but if you really want to enjoy the nature in full you should rent a kayak and paddle around. Be sure to check out the Haruru falls waterfalls and the views at Flagstaff Hill Track.

A short drive from Auckland is Coromandel, where you can get on a boat cruise for a reasonable price to check out this spot on the North Island of New Zealand. A banana boat was the best option I'd found and was only about $40 for a 1 and a half hour tour. There are beautiful rock formations to admire, caves to explore, and islands to check out. The Maori used the islands in this area as their gardens in the past, growing different crops on some of the little islands here. Bring a snorkel as there is diving opportunities here and be on the lookout for penguins as well, they sometimes hang out here. Don't miss Hot Water Beach, a truly unique experience where geothermally heated water is forced through cracks in the rocks below and up to the sand on the beach above. Be careful as sometimes the water is really hot, and you'll need to rent a spade to dig yourself up a good spot. Get to Hot Water Beach early, maybe 2 hours before low tide, to get yourself a good spot as it can get crowded.

New Zealand is full of natural wonders such as waterfalls, mountains, and gorgeous beaches so plan your trip wisely to allow enough time to truly enjoy it. If you are into adventure sports, New Zealand has that all covered, from zorbing to paragliding to bungee jumping or anything else you can imagine as a near death experience. However, if you are just a simple nature lover there are too many peaceful spots to re-charge your chi. Be safe, have fun, and enjoy this wonderful island nation for all its worth.

Lucky Rentals offers a unique way to see New Zealand, from a campervan. They offer campervan rentals in Auckland and Christchurch, covering both ends of the North and South Islands of New Zealand. They have 3 types of campervans for rent which run on diesel fuel. Lucky Rentals also is an affordable rental company and will beat any competitor offer by six percent.
