Technophobe? Using a Broadband Comparison Makes You Break Into a Cold Sweat?

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 347

I know that I'm taking a huge risk here, it could possibly end in me being labeled as a traitor and exiled from my own generation, or being hunted down in the streets by an angry lynch-mob, wielding torches. But I feel that it's important to be honest, so here goes...I'm 26 years old, and I don't like technology. The very idea of using even a broadband comparison service induces in me an overwhelming sense of dread.

I have no desire to join a social networking site and whittle away precious hours commentating on all the inane trivialities of my life, nor do I wish to share video clips of skateboarding dogs or piano playing cats with my loved ones. I like a simple life, I mean don't get me wrong, I'm all for progression, but I'm just not sure how much my quality of life has really been improved by being able to legally stalk old school friends on Facebook.

I admit that I am a bit of a Luddite. I still prefer to do my writing with a good old-fashioned pen and paper, and I like to do my socializing face to face. However, even somebody as archaic as myself can't help but be begrudgingly impressed by just how much the internet has changed over the last few years. No longer is it solely the realm of cyber geeks and the socially challenged. Nowadays everyone's at it. Hell, even my gran has been known to surf the web on occasion, although admittedly she called it 'swimming' the web.

It really has woven itself into the fabric of our everyday lives (or infested it, it depends on who you listen to). And I suppose that it does kind of make life a little bit easier. Maybe.

It is handy for looking up information when you just don't have that cumbersome reference book (that cost £40, weighs a ton and still doesn't contain all the information you need) at hand, and I suppose it can be quite good for downloading obscure music, that only a handful of years ago would have meant traipsing around ridiculous number of pretentious music stores in order to find. And I guess e-mail does save on a lot of stamps.

Okay, so maybe the internet isn't entirely without its uses, I just don't really see what all the fuss is about. Although, I do enjoy a bit of internet shopping. It is kind of a godsend; avoiding all those pesky crowds and no patronizing store clerk to cast a disapproving eye when I try on that dress that clearly doesn't suit me, but that I'm determined to buy anyway.

And who doesn't like the discounts? You can't beat a good book store, but when my bank account is suffering from the financial equivalent of diarrhoea, it's always trusty Amazon that satisfies my book addiction and prevents cold turkey from setting in.

So maybe I like the internet just a little bit more than I thought, but I will not join the crowds and become just another internet fanatic. I will not, because I'm not a sheep, I'm my own person. Now excuse me, I'm off to e-mail this hilarious clip of a breakdancing koala to a friend I met on Twitter.
