Should Teachers and Students Be Online Friends

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 125

Online social networking took a major turn when the vast social site, Facebook, was established. Although it originally was created as a social networking site for college students, it has become the biggest social networking site worldwide for people of all ages. There is no doubt that this innovative invention has been great in the sense that it connected people in ways we have never been connected before. However, there is a question of who should be connected to whom. When is the line drawn as to who you should befriend online? Should certain relationships be prohibited on the World Wide Web? These are questions that arise when looking at relationships of students with their teachers. Should student/teacher relationships be merely limited to the confinements of school grounds?

It's a great tool for Communication. What better way to communicate with students than with social sites such as Facebook. It is easy and readily available and chances are that they check their Facebook much more then they check their email. However, you must be careful because this can also backfire. Please remember that after all most high school students are considered minors and communicating with them via these online mediums can be a risky idea.

Where will the line be? Befriending your students can lead the student-teacher relationship to haze and in some cases, even disappear. As an authority in a school environment, you need to be able to show that you have a certain power over your students and most importantly, there needs to be respect. Relationships with students on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and any other social networking site can cause the student to reduce their respect toward you as they will think you are their friend, when in fact you are not. You are their teacher and authority on school grounds.

Inform yourself. Before you even consider becoming friends with any of your students, make sure you are aware of the policies that exist within your school, district, region, city, and even state regarding online relationships with students. Protect yourself from any potential lawsuits or even invasion of privacy that you do not want.

Be mindful and use common sense. If you decide that you are going ahead and adding your students into your networks, be mindful of what you put up on the internet. Once something is on the web, it is from hard to impossible of taking it off. Do not place things online that may jeopardize your job, family, and future. Do not post things you wouldn't say to your students in class. Refrain from saying things you would never say to their parents. And if these are not options for you, then make sure you change your privacy settings and customize them so that if you do write anything that the school, students, colleagues, or even parents wouldn't approve of, they will not be able to access them.

Whether or not you choose to become friends with your students online is a decision that is up to you. Just as there are pros to the situation, there are also many cons. Beware of the things you say and what you post because it may bring consequences and problems that you never intended on creating.
