Did Internet Kill the Television Star?

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 335

We already know that TV has killed the radio star, but will the rise of online media continue to make televisions defunct in a constant Oedipan rigmarole of sons constantly slaughtering their fathers?

Every major television channel is now living an alternative life online, they provide powerful, streaming catch-up services that allow audiences to watch programs whenever they like easily, saving the 1990s bother of operating VHS recorder machines. These services are increasingly allowing audiences to watch television live to give what would seem to be the same experience of watching a television normally. If the internet is growing so effectively to reproduce the function of your television will that start to mean that the television set is superfluous to modern living?

The time where families would sit down together and watch shows on a meagre selection of channels is over. Now it is not uncommon for there to be a TV in every room of the house and an individual viewer sitting in front of each too. The younger household members may even be using the family desktop or laptop to stream content from a catch-up service, as the influx of super-fast broadband technology speeding up internet speeds into the realms of science fiction.

But does this mean that old fashioned television providers like the BBC could become a thing of the past?

It might not be worth tearing up your TV licenses quite yet. Although the services and technology behind them is constantly developing and improving, online catch-up services still aren't quite as reliable as proper TVs and broadband infrastructures aren't yet ready for everybody to suddenly start demanding to stream at once. Internet service providers are already struggling to meet the demands of lots of customers using the internet at once, television events such as a Doctor Who Christmas special still gets millions of people watching all at once and that much demand all on the BBC's iPlayer could altogether be too much for many exchanges to handle.

In the mean time our old televisions are still useful; with more and more content becoming available on more and more channels on Freeview or subscription digital TV services and the added bonus that telecommunication companies will often offer bundle packages that wrap up broadband and television costs together to make the cost of being online and enjoying digital TV more manageable. The wide range of packages are designed to suit varying customer's needs, so remember to search price comparison websites to see Virgin and Orange broadband reviews and figure out the best deal for you.

Will the day that broadband technology can liberate us from our televisions for good come? Some think so, while other believe that web and TV services will become more integrated. With internet-ready televisions for sale now, integration doesn't seem any more likely than replacement.
