An Insight Into The Ethernet Connection

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 111

An Ethernet connection is an inter-connection mechanism used to link devices in a network. It uses a cable whose jack resembles that of a conventional phone. However, this is only compatible with other cables that are designed to fit in the particular socket.

This technology uses a special communication concept to convey information across a network. This concept is called datagrams, and it takes the form of self-contained information packets. These contain fields which hold information about the data type, its origin and destination. Each packet contains a data field that may hold up to 1.5 kilobytes.

When running in half duplex mode, this connection suffers from collision. This occurs when two or more computers send data simultaneously. Switches are used when running in full-duplex mode to eliminate collisions. Here, two computers establish a point-to point connection which avoids collisions.

Most computers have at least one interface to support this technology. With this, one can connect to a router/hub to access the internet or to establish a local area network. If your PC lacks such an interface, you can add one using a compatible PCI card or adapter.

The speeds supported range from 10 to 1000 Mbps. However, the number here indicates an ideal situation; the actual speed may vary. Single-carrier frequencies are used to ensure that all connected devices access the transmissions. Modern networks use twisted wire pairs to connect different stations in a radial pattern.

The most significant development is the use of switched Ethernet. This was developed to replace the shared medium, and has a dedicated segment for each station. These segments are connected to a switch. This picks up every single transmission before proceeding to a succeeding node and forwards data to the appropriate segment. Since a segment only has one node, the data is conveyed to its specific recipient. This enables multiple conversations to occur simultaneously over a network.

This technology has several advantages. While earlier versions were terribly slow, their modern counterparts can now send information at 100 Gbps. Large files can thus be transferred across a network in a short time.

The cabling used here is standard, which enhances installation simplicity. One can easily purchase and install the right cabling, together with its peripherals. You can purchase a hub/router at your local outlet and insert the cables into their respective ports on your computers. Since modern computers come with inbuilt network adapters, you can establish a connection with little technical knowledge.

Unlike other types of cable which are relatively hard to find, the ones used here are readily available. If you happen to accidentally break a cable, you can easily find a replacement at a local store. It is also easy to find all affiliated hardware as well.

This makes it easy if you want to upgrade your local network. Unlike fiber optical equipment which is expensive, the technology used here is affordable. It is therefore easier to upgrade your network as opposed to migrating to a different technology. An Ethernet connection is also easy to use where a network has several computers running on different operating systems.
