4 Reasons ILEC's, CLECS, Cable and Virtual Operators Better Get on the SMS Long Code Band Wagon

April 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 140

The telecommunications industry has become a very complex industry and companies providing traditional landline services in the United States need to keep pace with the forever expanding and highly adopted wireless carriers and their services.

Is the landline provider eventually going away?

Customer Reach Advantage

The answer is no, but landline carriers may have to look beyond their "wired walls" and quickly capitalize on their competitive advantage - having a much larger customer reach than wireless carriers. Their reach encompasses all the landline users and the wireless users.

ILEC's, CLECS, Cable and Virtual Operators may not know what they have. What they have is a tremendous opportunity to take a significant piece of the texting business and revenue, which most are currently unnecessarily giving away to their competitors. With texting volumes predicted to go into the double digit trillions in the very near future, it is a force and revenue stream that can't be ignored.

What they might not know as well, is the opportunity in the untapped market for using SMS (text messaging) for hyper-localized services. Unlike the Short Code which requires a monthly lease of $500 - $1000 depending on whether it is a standard or vanity code, the Long Code is simply an SMS enabled phone number that the customer owns and is just an added feature set which carries a minimal cost.

Carriers who enable their telephone lines to carry SMS can then provide customers a complete unified communications package making the telephone line a single communications entry point in and out of a business for voice, fax and text.

Once a carrier SMS enables their telephone lines their customers will no longer have to seek out a mobile provider for a Short Code to have the ability to provide a texting service, it can all be supplied by their primary telephone line provider.

Shorten Time to Market

Not only will the carrier be able to provide the transport for text messaging they will also be able to shorten the time to market for their customers who want to incorporate texting into their business. The reason for this is all the red tape associated with the Short Code disappears with the Long Code and a process that used to take 3-6 months can be shortened to days or even hours.

Carriers who wish to enable their base of telephone numbers need to work with an experience Long Code enabler who is established and can deliver text messages through all the cellular carriers' networks.

With 193,000 text messages sent every second and 73% (and climbing) of mobile device users texting, there is no need for the ILEC's, CLECS, Cable and Virtual Operators to sit around and "see what is going to happen," it already is happening and if they don't jump on board, they might miss the boat.
