Why the Jab Is So Important

February 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

Anyone who has done boxing for more than a day can tell you it's the most important punch in the sport of boxing. It's the first punch a fighter learns and it is the one he will use the most. Here is the reason why.

Good defense

A good jab can stop an opponent in his tracks. If a fighter moves in with his flurry of punches, the opposing fighter will throw jabs out there to break it up. He also may throw it as he moves back or side to side in order to keep his opponent at bay.

In a street fight, a quick, well-placed jab can end it right there. A punch to the chin or the bridge of the nose can put a would be attacker down, but it will also break up his attack or keep him from attacking in the first place.

Offense

The jab is also the most used offensive tool a boxer has. It serves three main purposes. The first is to measure the distance between a fighter and his opponent. By constantly throwing the jab out there, a good boxer can tell if his opponent is close enough for any other punch. The second purpose is that it starts to wear down other fighters. The third is that it sets up combos.

Sets up combos

The third reason for the jab is probably the most important one. The jab is a great punch to set up combos. It draws the attention and distracts the opposing fighter from all other body movement. This allows good boxers to sneak in punches.

The jab may also cause an opposing fighter to move in a direction that would make him easier to hit. For instance if a competitor moves to his left to avoid a straight punch, then he can be hit by a right hook. If he moves the other way then he can get hit by a left hook. That is just a couple of the possibilities with the jab.

Sets up kicks

The jab is just as important for a kick boxer as it is for boxers. It draws the attention and distracts the opposing fighter, making him focus up high. However, instead of delivering another punch, a good kick boxer will deliver a powerful kick usually to the legs or hips.

This is why boxers throw hundreds of jabs during training sessions and are always looking for new ways to make it stronger.
