February 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 150

Throughout his or her training, a boxer is likely to use a variety of punching bags, each with its purpose. It is important for the trainee to understand how each one should be used and why. This way he or she can train effectively. Here is some information and pointers about the six most common punching bags.

Heavy bags

This type of punching bag is used for practicing power punches and combos. It is usually hung from the ceiling or a stand. These bags can weigh between 25 pounds and 100 pounds. In most cases leather or canvas is used to make the liner. Sand and other materials are used to fill the bag.

When choosing a heavy bag keep these tips in mind. Lighter bags move more, which makes them good for improving foot work. Heavier bags are more solid and are good for conditioning the hands. For adults, heavy bags between 70 and 90 pounds are recommended. Children should start with a 25 to 50-pound punching bag.

Standing bags

These are usually made by wrapping some padding around a weighted stand or base filled with water or sand. They come in many shapes and sizes. Standing bags are great for improving kicks and combos that include kicks.

Here is some advice for choosing a Standing bag. Get the one that is in the shape of a person. It allows fighters to target pacific areas and will improve the precision of their strikes.

Inflatable standing bags

These are usually for kids. It is usually designed to bounce back after being hit. They can't with stand the force that an adult strike has, but they can be good for hand and eye coordination if an open hand strike is used.

Horizontal upper cut bag

This is used to practice strikes that are delivered upward. It looks like a small heavy bag that hangs horizontally from the ceiling. There are also wall mount upper cut bags. These are great for improving upper cuts and converted hooks.Double end bag

This is one of the best tools to use for hand and eye coordination, as well as counter strikes. It is a ball that is a little smaller than a basketball. It is usually attached to the floor and the ceiling by two coils. It is designed to snap back at the fighter after he or she hits' it. This simulates the counterstrike.

Here is a quick tip for buying a double end bag. Don't get a cheap one. A cheap one is more likely to inflate after being hit few times.

Speed bag

This is used for hand-eye coordination and timing. It is a tear drop shaped bag, attached by a short string to a board above. When it gets hit, it snaps right back. The idea is to be able to hit it on the return as quickly as possible.

Just using a couple of these punching tools can greatly increase a fighter's capabilities.
