Can Dance Help Boxers?

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 259

Most fighters may laugh at the idea of taking dance lessons to improve their skills as boxers. However, some know just how beneficial it really can be. Dancing can help fighters out both physically and mentally. It can improve foot work, balance, thinking, and fitness levels.

Foot work

For most people learning the foot work in boxing is the hardest part about it. It's not easy for boxers to keep their feet under them while they jab forward or back. It only gets harder when they have to go side to side. Then if it wasn't hard enough foot work on the defensive is even harder to do. Fighters have to keep themselves from stumbling, while dodging punches. This is why it is important for them to able to move swiftly without thinking.

This is where dancing styles like tap and hip hop can help. Like boxing foot work, dancing steps are a little awkward at first. Then muscle memory kicks in and it starts to feel a little more natural. Dance will also put a little more spring into a competitor's step. This allows them to move more quickly and fluidity.

Balance

Many fighters might think it unmanly to take ballet, but the rewards can be worth it. Ballet requires great balance, flexibility, lower body strength and a good pain tolerance. Fighters who man up and choose to part take in this dance could gain a lot of agility and leg muscle. They will also probably walk way with a new respect for ballet dancers.

Mindset

One would think that boxer wouldn't need any more confidence. However, many freeze up when put into an uncomfortable position. Again ballet is good for this. It will teach future competitors hard work and humility.

A good alternative is salsa dancing and other pair dancing styles. In these styles of dance, posture and mindset are very important. For male fighters this is a great confidence builder. Those part taking in this will learn to lead their partner, which will require rhythm, timing, and a leader's mindset.

Cardio

Last, but not least, dancing is great for building endurance. Think about it. How many over weight dancers do you see? Not a whole lot of them. This is because, some types of dancing can burn as many calories as kick boxing. For the best cardio, I suggest hip hop or tap dancing.

There are probably many more reasons for boxers and any other fighter to take up dancing. However, the reasons above should be enough for all fighters to at least think about adding dancing to their training.
