Boxing on the Big Screen

March 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

Throughout the history of movie making, boxing was always a popular subject. There is something about the heart ache that comes with this brutal sport that seems to pull in the crowds. Boxing movies aren't just popular with fans, but with critics as well. There have been at least six boxing movies to date that have brought in more than twenty Oscar nominations. It is with good reason these movies get this kind of attention, they are memorable, fun to watch, and often have gripping story lines. Too further explain this point here is just a few of the boxing movies we know and love.

Rocky

This movie was so good, They had to make six of them. The first one, was the only one too win the Oscar though. This classic movie about a small time boxer that gets a chance to fight the heavyweight champ, stars Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, and Burt Young. This movie brought in 225 million dollars not bad for a movie made in 1976.

Sylvester Stallone also wrote the script and stared in the other six. Stallone also wrote the other five films as well as directed four of them. These films are Stallone's biggest credits to his career, each one grossing more than 100 million dollars in theaters.

The Fighter

This movie is about an Irish boxer named Micky Ward, who was trained by his brother and became a pro in the 1980s. It is based on a true story. It's not going to be a classic like rocky is, but it is still a darn good movie.

This movie, starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, won two Oscars in 2011. Besides winning two Oscars, the film also won a Golden Globe and brought in more than 129 million dollars world wide in theaters.

Million Dollar Baby

This one is a four-time Oscar winner. It's one of the few movies about female boxers that is any good. The movie stars Hilary Swank as a female boxer trying to establish herself. Clint Eastwood plays a trainer that works hard to train her with the help of his friend played by Morgan Freeman.

Besides acting in the movie, Clint Eastwood also directed the film. Not bad considering the movie went on to make over 100 million dollars.

Raging Bull

Despite being made in the 80's this film is shot in black and white, which I feel made this movie even more of a classic. A award winning cast also help with that. The movie stars Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty and Joe Pesci. The movie also won two Oscars. However, it only did about 23 million in theaters, but don't let that stop you from watching it.

There is a ton of other boxing movies out there. Most of them are good and many of them have made money. As a matter of fact, boxing movies have made so much money that it is likely movie makers will continue making new ones.
