3 Ways to Developing Speed in Boxing

February 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 145

Speed and foot work are a couple of the hardest attributes to gain when training in boxing. It takes hours of training a week for years to gain the muscle memory needed to react quickly. The drills used to gain speed are exhausting and take a lot of energy to complete. However, the work pays off in the end.

To gain the desired speed try a few of these drills.

Jump rope

When, jumping rope try to switch your feet. One of the easiest ways to do this is to simply step over the rope when it comes around. It's kinda like your walking right over it. Try to avoid driving your foot back, because it may trip you up.

It is also good to do a couple of minutes of normal jump roping too. However, to increase your speed it must be done at a quick pace. Switch speeds from fast, too slow, and fast again can also be very beneficial.

Stair climbers

There are a few of these on the market, but basically all you need is something strong enough to support your weight. For example, I have used a cinder block. Cheap Stair climbers can also be purchased on Ebay and other auction sites. Whatever you choose, try not to use anything over a foot tall.

There are two main drills you can use this for. The first one is simple. Step on with one foot and then the other. Then immediately step off leading with the last foot to step on the stair. Repeat, but each time lead with a different foot. The idea is to pick up speed as you get use to the movement.

The next are just as simple as the first. Start by standing on one side of your step. Then, jump on top of it with both feet and immediately onto the other side after. Start off slow and try to pick up speed as you get better.

Running tires

Ok we have all seen shows where athletes run through tires, making sure to put their foot in each one. The good news is you don't need tires to do this. Instead try using some inflatable tubes. They can be bought cheap online or in any pool store.

Once you have six or eight of them, line the up in pairs and run through them. Do this three to five times at first then increase it as needed.

This should be enough to get you on your way to becoming a speedy fighter.
