All You Need to Know About Lawn Bowling

March 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 199

Lawn bowling is a wonderful non-intensive outdoor sport that has been around for several centuries. As a sport, it has attracted players from different age groups and classes.

How to Play

Lawn bowling is played by opposing teams which are usually grouped into twos, threes and fours. These teams are then expected to roll the balls towards the jack. The team that manages to roll the bowls towards the jacks for as many times as were agreed upon at the beginning of the game, or for as many times over and above what the opposing team manages, automatically wins the game.

While rolling the bowls, it is important to remember that you are only allowed to do so within the area that has been agreed upon. In addition to this, you are also not expected to roll the bowls beyond the jack as this will not earn you marks.

The history of bowling

Lawn bowling started way back in the 13th century in Britain. This means that the sport has had many years to develop. It started as a sport for old people who were looking for something to keep them busy. Lawn bowling offered the old people an outdoor sport which would not only entertain them but also encourage them to exercise.

In its early years, and this is tradition, the players usually dressed in white. As such, they earned themselves the name the "leghorns" after the chicken. The comparison, some say, was spot on!

Lawn bowling, as we have correctly mentioned, started in Britain. It was however to later spread to many other commonwealth countries. Today, it has spread to a number of such commonwealth countries like Scandinavia, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and the British Isles. Therefore, if you were to visit these countries, you are likely to see many bowling clubs opened in them. It is in this bowling clubs that lawn bowling events are held.

Accounting for its popularity

Although we have mentioned that lawn bowling started off as a sport for especially the old, this should not necessarily mean that only old people play or enjoy bowling. If you took time to visit a bowling club, you will notice that there are probably more young people than the old who have turned up for the bowling event.

The high numbers of young people in many lawn bowling activities can be explained by the hype that comes with modern bowls. The usually scenario at a bowling club is enough beer and barbecue to go around. In addition to this, there are also musicians, DJs and bands who are usually invited to perform during these events. What this means is that bowling events combine sporting and partying to sell a brand that is irresistible to many young people.

Given that it encourages teamwork, it is a good sport for bonding activities. As such families, friends and companies can use it to bring closer those involved.
