Networking Confidence - It's A Must

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 129

So you have a business, and you are now ready for the world to know about it and you! You have purchased a new suit and you are ready to hit the networking circuit and tell everyone that will listen about your business. The problem is this - you have never done anything like this and you are not sure what to do. All this is brought on because you have no idea about the rules of engagement regarding how to make this event as successful as possible. There is good news however, and if that scenario is you, there is hope.

I was recently given the opportunity to share my experiences, as it pertains to networking, as a guest panelist on a national broadcast radio show, and as someone who is in the public speaking, and consulting on self-defense and fitness, I was honored to be able to share my thoughts. The following covers the five tips anyone can do to increase their connections while networking!

Come To The Table With Confidence

Imagine a huge train coming down the tracks. Now would it be a bit weird if the horn sounded and what you heard was more like a bell on a bike instead of the loud blaring sound you are accustomed to hearing from a train? Yes, I thought so. The same applies when you are networking. If you are trying to gain business, then you need to be confident in your approach...period! It is a let down when it's your turn to speak and people have a hard time hearing you because you are speaking too softly and not making eye contact with anyone, while your body language is telling others you would rather be back at home! Just like the picture of the train and the bicycle bell don't match - the person who lacks confidence at a networking event does not match either. For example, keep you shoulders back, speak from the diaphragm, and don't speak too quickly. Slow down and breath while talking! You will lose people if they have to strain to understand you!

Leave Then Wanting More

Many times, people new to the networking game, give way too much information and I have even noticed that it is sometimes done before names have been exchanged! Bad idea here. I don't know about you, but if someone is about to throw up, I get out of the way so I don't get any on me. The same thing applies in networking! Don't come to the meeting and spill your guts out to someone when you have not even told them your name. Very unattractive, so don't do it!

Keep The Hand Firm

I am talking about the hand shake here folks! I can not tell you how many people I have encountered with a weak handshake! Many may think this one does not matter so much because of people doing more with electronic gadgets and such, but I am here to tell you that it does matter! Both men and women would do well to just firm up the handshake because you don't want the other person to have any seconds thoughts about doing business with you!

Seek The Opportunity

Now your speech is over and the meeting has come to a close - now what? Don't be afraid to seek out the business. Look, even if you blew your introduction, chances are good there was someone there who connected with you because you were genuine. Following up is an art form and one will increase their chances of networking success if they are not afraid to go up to someone and ask about exchanging information. By the way, get comfortable with hearing the word no!

Make It Fun

If you can't find a way to make this fun, then you may as well stay at home. It has got to be fun folks. I used to take the word "no" personally but soon realized that is was not personal at all. Perhaps they just did not need my services or I did not do the best job in telling about what I offer. In this case, I learned and IMPROVED!

Well there you have it, you have just learned about the five tips that will help you increase your quality connections while networking. Let me know how this works for you!
