Keep Birds Off Your Boat With Bird Repellents

July 02, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 200

Summer is here and it is time to open up the boat and go sailing. You head down to the marina to get the boat ready to sail, and when you get there you are greeted with bird poop all over the sails, rails and even the radar. Now you have an extra hour or so of clean up before you can head out to the open seas. Boaters all over the nation experience this same scenario, from coast to coast and along major lakes and rivers. It is time to get bird control for your boat if you find that you too are sharing this poop clean up ritual.

Methods to Keep Birds Off Your Boat:

  1. Physical bird deterrents - installing physical bird deterrents in the areas that the birds are landing will make it impossible to land so they will go to the next boat with ideal conditions. There are products such as the Bird Spider system that open up into a large diameter area of coverage, some up to 8 feet. These are ideal for Biminis, masts, sails and even attached to rails. Bird spikes can also be used on flat surfaces such as radars and sails to keep the birds from landing. They are easily attached with zip ties, and easy to remove and stow while using the boat.
  2. Visual bird deterrents - installing visual deterrents on the boat masts and lines can keep birds from choosing your boat to land on. The deterrents will move with the breeze and shine the sun's reflection back at the birds. The birds will not like the bright moving objects on the boat and choose a more hospitable environment to land. These bird control devices are also easy to take down and stow while the boat is being used.
  3. Sound bird deterrents - installing a sound deterrent on the boat will keep a wide variety of birds off your boat. The sound deterrents play bird distress calls and predator calls that scare birds from the area. One unit covers about an acre of area, so you might be doing your neighboring boats a favor. The loud calls that come from the sound bird deterrents invoke the bird's natural instinct to danger. They will think that there is danger around your boat and flee the area to somewhere safer.

It is a good idea to include bird deterrents as a part of opening your boat each year. Once the boat is back in it's slip, it is fair game to the local bird population. Make your boat safe from birds and the droppings and messes they leave behind. You have a much more enjoyable summer using your boat.
