How Do You Blog: Risks When Getting Started

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

When you start a blog, you need to start with a strategic plan and a project plan. The strategic plan tells you what you want to achieve. The project plan tells you how you are going to achieve it.

The project plan for a blog is like any other project plan. A little on the simple side perhaps but like any project plan it needs to cover five major areas.

One of the most important areas is risk.

In this article, I'm not going to deal with the whole topic of risk management. Suffice it to say, there are two focuses around risk management you need to understand. The first is process and the second is the mathematics of risk.

Before you get scared at the word mathematics, all you really need to know is that we use the words wrong. Risk simply means something that is uncertain. What we need to manage is a risk event. More specifically, we need to manage either the effect or the probability. Of course, the effect could be either positive (good) or negative (bad).

Secondly, risk management consists of three tasks. The first is identifying the risks. The second is describing the risks in terms of their probability and effect. And the third is determining a response both to the occurrence and to encourage or discourage the risk event.

That being said, this article is going to focus on some of the risks that you need to consider when planning your blogging project.

The first and biggest is interruptions. In fact, I'd almost be tempted to say these aren't risk events but certainties. Whatever plans you make for blogging you can pretty well guarantee that something will occur to prevent you getting things done on time. Since you most likely will be doing everything yourself you really do need to include an allowance for the medical appointments, phone calls, and lawn cutting that seems to be most prevalent exactly when you need to get work done.

The next event to concern yourself with is the difficulty with determining topics. Yes, you've picked a major topic with all kinds of possibilities. But coming up with the title for an individual blog entry? Suddenly that's going to become a major effort. And it's going to take you time to come up with a topic for today. And sometimes, you are going to be faced with nothing at all. Not quite the dreaded writer's block. More of a blogger's block.

The third major risk event is underestimation of effort. It takes time to create the blog entries, the traffic articles and the products you are going to sell. And it always seems to take longer than you expect. Somehow, that 500-word article grows to 700 before you can cut it off. Or the words won't come as fast as you need. The devouring monster of writer's block raises its deathly head. In any case, that one hour for blogging becomes four or five. Days usually. Having a solution for when you can't produce can make your life much more pleasant.

The final risk I'm going to suggest is traffic related. For some reason, people think that Google can list them and have tons of traffic within a day or two. Of course, it doesn't happen like that. Traffic builds slowly -- usually. It almost always takes time for Google to realize you are there. And even longer to realize you have something important to say. And of course, you still need to convince your readers to visit your site. Of course, if you plan on that happening you'll suddenly find you are the exception that makes the rule. Or you'll find that it takes twice as long before Google wakes up to your blog being worthwhile. Or that you're at the bottom of a very long list of sites on your keywords.
