Is a Glucose Fuel Cell Implant in the Brain in Your Future? It's a Mind Blowing Proposition Indeed

June 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 244

Well, the human brain is an incredible organic device. It is amazing what it can do on very little energy. Your laptop at home may use as much as 9 Amps, and if you were to convert that to calories you'd immediately see how incredible your brain's processing power is. In the future, we may be using a combination of organic brain and computer processing. There will be interfaces, and you may even be able to do thought-swapping with your friends and family program, or even text message people on your social network, all by thinking.

Imagine a medical device in your brain that used your brains own glucose to power up? It turns out scientist have created such a device. A piece in Kurzweil's Accelerating Intelligence titled; "New Energy Source for Future Medical Implants: Brain Glucose," which stated; " MIT engineers have developed a fuel cell that runs on glucose for powering highly efficient brain implants of the future that can help paralyzed patients."

Okay sure, great application, but let's ask what happens as such devices are used for more things in the future. Think of all the other potential applications for this in the future? Too many to even consider right now. Of course if we are borrowing glucose from the brain to run a less efficient device, one which has not stood the test of time and evolutionary process, then we may be depleting the brain of the glucose it needs elsewhere - causing permanent damage over time, thus, perhaps a glucose supplement or diet modification must also accompany such an implant.

Since the computerized systems that mankind makes demand so much power for what they do, at least currently, they may not be feasible. It's going to be very hard to beat evolution and Mother Nature on this. After all evolution has had a huge start, and humans are at the top of the food chain. If we are to borrow energy from the human body, we will be taking energy away from the vital systems it needs to operate and function properly, to maintain itself as a self-healing system.

Therefore, we should proceed with these technologies, human interfaces, but we must do so with both eyes open, and not jeopardize human health in the process. It's a brave new world out there, and we have a lot to learn, so we'd better get busy on the research and science to make this happen, all the while being very careful what we are messing with, because life is real, and it's really special. Indeed I hope you will please consider all that and think on it.
