A Review of Nelson Mandela's 'A Long Walk to Freedom'

January 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 354

A person doesn't have to wonder for long who Nelson Mandela is with an Oscar Award winning actor, Morgan Freeman, portraying him. The multi-award winning actor does a dynamic job of playing real life political great, Nelson Mandela-one of the best of our generation. Mandela was imprisoned for sabotage and confined to a cell in a South African jail for 27 years. He was released in 1990, and four years later became the president of South Africa.

Because he has been the face of the racial equality fight in South Africa for more than 60 years, Nelson Mandela has been honored by some of the most prestigious awards known to man. Some of his U.S. and international awards include: the Nobel Peace Prize, the International Peace and Freedom Award, the Bremen Solidarity Prize, the United Nations Human Rights Fourth Award, the Lenin Peace Prize, the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize, and the Atatürk International Peace Prize and many more.

As president of the African National Congress (ANC), Nelson Mandela was influential in getting South Africa out of the stone ages of segregation. Admired globally as a strong proponent of equal rights for all, Nelson Mandela is a world-class hero. A Long Walk to Freedom tells of his early years as a poor student and law clerk in Johannesburg. The foster son of a Thembu chief takes us inside his early political development, and his key role in the beginning of an inactive ANC during the 1950s. He explains to us the fight to unite his political activity with his commitment to his family, the heartbreaking end to his first marriage with Winnie, and the subsequent split from his children. Brought to life for all to experience, is the rising political conflict in the fifties between the ANC and the South African government, ending in his eventual imprisonment. Read first accounts of the ongoing, intricate concessions for his release, bringing apartheid to an end.

If you should read just one book this year, make it A Long Walk to Freedom. More than a feel good book of inspiration, it captures the progress of a people--a movement to gain their right within their own homeland. Defeating one of the most dominant and effective systems of tyranny ever conceived by man has been a long time in the making. But Mandela teaches us equality among all of Africa's citizens is well worth the fight.

I leave you with this quote by Mandela: "You may succeed in delaying, but never in preventing the transition of South Africa to a democracy."
