Llandudno - Alice In Wonderland

October 13, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

Known as the 'Queen of Welsh Resorts', Llandudno is a beautiful seaside resort on the shores of the azure Irish Sea. It was developed in the mid-nineteenth century to serve as a holiday destination for government officials and their families. Llandudno is located between two limestone cliffs, and has two charming beaches: the bustling North Shore beach and the quieter West Shore beach. Some of the popular attractions in the town are the Great Orme headland, Bodnant Gardens, Venue Cymru and Bodafon Farm Park.

Llandudno is also famous for its link with Lewis Carroll, the author who wrote the children's classic 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. The primary character of this book called 'Alice' was based on a little girl named Alice Liddell, whom Carroll used to tell stories to as a child. The family of Alice Liddell owned a holiday home called Penmorfa, on the West Shore of Llandudno, which they would often visit during vacations. According to local myth, Carroll met Alice during one of these vacations, and began making up stories for her amusement, which he later wrote down and published.

The Penmorfa was built on a piece of land purchased by Alice's family in around 1861. The family regularly vacationed here for 11 years until it was sold. The holiday home was later transformed into the Gogarth Abbey Hotel, and later renamed the Penmorfa Hotel. Ignoring public protests, the building was torn down in 2009 by private developers to make way for a new structure. According to another myth, Lewis Carroll wrote his books about Alice at the St.George's Hotel in Llandudno, located a short distance away from where the Penmorfa once stood.

Another venue in Llandudno with an Alice connection was The Alice in Wonderland Centre. This centre had an indoor walk-through exhibition of the 'rabbit hole' mentioned in the book, with life-size displays of various scenes. It also had a gift shop which stocked a huge collection of Alice merchandise, which included dolls, costumes, books, toys and other souvenirs. Sadly, this venue has also closed down.

Even so, the Alice in Wonderland trail still survives through a life-sized statue of the White Rabbit on the West Shore. As the statue has been repeatedly vandalised since it was unveiled twenty years ago, it has been decided to move the statue to the middle of a boating lake. In addition, tourists can also view wooden sculptures of characters from the 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' book at Happy Valley Gardens, on the eastern side of the Great Orme headland.
