Forget Five Star Hotels - Explore New Zealand The Right Way

May 02, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 152

Touring New Zealand isn't about the luxury accommodation and being "pampered by the pool".

Sure, the country has some fantastic resorts and lodges; who wouldn't want to relax in style looking out over Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown or have their every desire catered for at a Rotorua spa resort? But, if you really want to experience the country, resorts and lodges aren't the place to stay.

If you are looking for an authentic Kiwi experience during your travels, you don't have to spend top dollar staying in four and five star hotels. Some of the alternatives to expensive accommodation offer a far more exciting and interesting way to see the country. Explore the back roads camping, meet new people in hostels or get to know each region in the local motels and bed and breakfasts.

Camping around NZ

With plenty of places to pitch your tent, such as Opunake Beach in Taranaki, to Mount Maunganui in the Bay of Plenty, road tripping from camping ground to camping ground is a great way to see the country, meet new people and enjoy your time in the New Zealand outdoors. Cost effective and a lot of fun, you're sure to pack more into your journey with a tent in the car.

Map out the camp sites in the regions you plan on visiting and make sure you read up on the local bylaws so you don't get in trouble for freedom camping or pitching your tent in the wrong place. The Department of Conservation manages a number of camping areas on conservation land across the country, including Cable Bay campsite in the Bay of Islands, and Otaki Forks campsite in the Kapiti region near Wellington, but there are also areas (in particular farmland and paddocks) that are privately owned. Remember to take your mess with you!

Bed and Breakfast

A little bit of luxury and a lot of comfort on the cheap - if you're planning on a skiing trip to some of the best mountains in the world during the winter months, such as Mt Ruapehu, Cardrona and Mt Hutt it's great being able to come back to your accommodation in NZ completely exhausted, fall asleep under a nice blanket and wake up to a warm meal.

Along with the comfort, a lot of people enjoy staying in a historic home and the local knowledge that the locals can impart. Ask for ideas on what to do in the area and make sure you aren't missing out on anything during your stay.

Always the best when you've been on the road a while. Just park on up and head on in; most towns have a couple of good quality motels for travellers to stay in and the main centres in the country usually have a couple of dozen. Hamilton's Ulster Street has an abundance of motels for you to choose from, while the smaller town of Te Kuiti an hour south is a perfect overnight stop for families traveling with young children.

Enjoy the usual luxuries of home, laundry areas and Internet access in usually perfect locations. Perfect if you feel a little spontaneous or you aren't too sure where you'll end up next!
