Laser Hair Removal And The Hair Growth Cycle - What We Should Know About It

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 205

With the era of technological advancements, beauty is of no excuse to it. One of the issues we get hooked up is on getting rid of unwanted hair, less the effort and more with the results. We get more and more methods to get rid of hair as time goes on, from physical plucking, shaving and waxing to chemical use, to electrolysis and laser treatments. But before we take on any method, it is fit and proper that we be guided by the normal anatomy and physiology, the cycle of how hair is grown. Knowing this simply helps us understand on how to keep hair from growing.

Each hair is contained in a pilosebaceous unit. This pilosebaceous unit consists of the following structures: a hair shaft, hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and erector pili muscle. The hair, since it is a growing structure, undergoes a cycle of three (3) phases. These are the Anagen phase, the Catagen phase, and the Telogen phase.

First stop is the Anagen phase. In this state hair starts to grow, cells start to divide and increase in number, growth is active. About eighty-five percent (85%) of our body hairs is in the active growth phase. Our hairs, in this state, are directly connected to the blood vessels, helping them in their continuing growth, and are abundant of the melanin component. This would mean that lasers are effective in the hair removal process since melanin, the target of the laser beams, is abundant in the roots of the hairs. All hairs are targeted in the treatment but hairs in the Anagen phase respond best to the laser hair removal procedure that is why sessions are repeated after some time, making sure that hairs are already at a growing state.

Then the hair moves on to another phase --- the Catagen phase or the regressive phase, the second occurrence in the cycle. Approximately, three percent (3%) to four (4%) of our body hair is in this phase. Hair structures in this phase are not capable of absorbing laser energies since they are no longer connected to the network of blood vessels, therefore, hairs could not be disabled but can be destroyed. This phase lasts for about two (2) weeks.

Lasty is the Telogen phase, which is otherwise known as the resting phase. There are about a proportion of ten (10%) to thirteen (13%) of our body hairs in this phase. As hairs reach the Telogen phase, they are now preparing to fall out. Since they are no longer connected to blood vessels, they could not absorb laser light and be destroyed by them --- they simply fall out of their places by natural process. The phase lasts for five (5) to six (6) weeks, and then a new hair begins to form. With the formation of new hair being applied with laser hair removal treatment, there is a possible retardation of new growth since areas for melanin supply are treated at an earlier state.

When you plan to get a laser hair removal treatment for those unwanted hairs, get to know the normal hair growth cycles first, and you'll be aware of how your treatment is doing... and how to keep the results
