Look What's New - Blue! The New Blue Smokey Eye

April 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

Most of us love that smokey eye look. This look is so sensual and sultry that it can transform any plain Jane into a seductive temptress just with a wink of those smoking hot eyes.

The traditional smokey eye is usually created with a color palette that include black, charcoal, gray, silver, pewter, etc. However, the "Blue" smokey eye is quickly becoming the new smokey favorite. Stars such as Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and Beyoncé have been seen wearing this scorching hot look.

To try your hand at this gorgeous creation, you will need to start out with three blue hues in the same color family. Try choosing a midnight blue for your darkest color; If you'd like something sassier try a royal blue as your darkest shade. I prefer working with mineral powders since I find the pigments are more robust, they tend to last longer and are more versatile.

The secret to the sexy smokey eye look is in the blending and smudging of the eyeliner and eye shadows. Be prepared with sponges for smudging and brushes for diffusing and blending.

The first step is to curl your eyelashes. Having your eyelashes curled, gets them out of the way and makes your eyes look bigger and wider. Do not worry about applying mascara at this point.

Next, outline your eyes with a dark blue pencil eyeliner. You will need a good quality pencil, that when applied goes on smooth. I like to use a mineral eyeliner as well, since they are velvety smooth when applied. For this step you can also choose to use a black eyeliner for a bit of contrast. Again, make your way all around your eye, making sure the line is thicker along the upper lashes. Don't worry about being precise with your lines because the next step is to take a sponge brush and smudge the eyeliner you just applied.

With a brush, apply your base mineral color on your eyelid and above the crease, about halfway to the eyebrows. Remember to use a color a bit lighter than the darkest shade you have picked out, I like to use a misty blue/gray color for my base.

With a contour eye shadow brush apply your darkest shade to the crease of your eyes. It helps if you close your eyes, place the brush at the crease and then open your eyes with the brush already placed at the crease. The natural fold of the eye will then guide your brush.

Using the same color you used for the crease of your eyelids, you will now need to distinguish the outside corners of your eyes by drawing an "L" laying on its side. With the shortest part of the "L" placed on the outside corner of your eye and the longest leg of the "L" blending back into the crease. Finish applying your last and lightest color to the rest of your upper eyelid. I recommend a very light color such as a soft silvery blue or an especially pale baby blue.

Now take your blending brush and blend, blend, blend! One color should fuse seamlessly with the other. Finally apply your mascara by placing the mascara brush as close as possible to the base of the eyelashes. Wiggle at the base and pull through. Repeat until all lashes are covered. Remember to wiggle and pull through since this is the process that will help you avoid clumpy and sticky eyelashes making your final look flawless. You're done!

However, if you would like a more brazen look for a night out, try applying your mineral eye shadows with a wet brush. The look is fantastically bold and intense simulating a tattooed on appearance. Have fun!
