How To Make The Most Of Space In A Small Bathroom

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 294

Small bathrooms can be a little claustrophobic, however there is much that can be done to remove this feeling of containment and make a small bathroom feel a lot larger than it actually is. Here we look at some of the tricks you can use when planning to decorate or completely refurbish your new bathroom to create the illusion that the room is actually larger than it is.

Counters

Floating counters can deliver a lot of storage space and also are a nice feature and finish in such bathrooms, where fittings can often look a little untidy. By ensuring you have a lot of room for storage below the counter, you are making plenty of room in the bathroom and eliminating that clutter that really destroys the impression of space. Try to avoid storing too much beneath the under counter area as this will completely destroy your new found sense of airiness.

Mirrors

Large mirrors are a great way to create a lot more light and brighten up small rooms which often lack light and look small because of this shortage of brightness. Large mirrors reflect light and create a sense of larger size and more room. Be sure to use mirrors which are particularly designed for use in bathrooms however, otherwise you will find that they are damaged in no time at all by steam from the room.

Skylights

Skylights are also a great way to allow a lot more brightness into a bathroom and so are also a recommended addition to such a room, particularly if you have no window. Of course if you have no window, you will also need to invest in a exhaust fan to remove damp air and to comply with any building regulations which may apply to bathrooms and showers rooms.

Gloss Tiles

Large light coloured gloss tiles also help to reflect light around the bathroom and create a clean and attractive impression. They don't necessarily have to be white and once they are pale in colour will have this effect. White can look cold and create an unwelcome feel in a small bathroom.

Shower Curtains Rather Than Screens

Whilst shower curtains were once seen to be old fashioned, they have made something of a comeback in recent times. You will find that being able to tuck these back attractively when not in use help a lot with space saving in your bathroom. Be sure to buy light coloured shower curtains however, as dark or bright patterns or colours will dominate the room too much and work against your small bathroom design objectives.

Fittings

It is also possible to purchase smaller than normal fittings for your bathroom. These fittings often have the same size area for practical use, but are often tapered, or smaller underneath or below to ensure they take up a smaller footprint in the bathroom. Choosing such fittings can greatly increase the space in such a small bathroom.

Using a Bathroom Designer

You can, of course, enlist the services of professional bathroom specialists who are often in-house at some of the more well known bathroom companies. However, always remember to compare several quotes for your new bathroom design if you do choose to get a new one fitted.
