Cleaning Your Bathroom Doesn't Mean Dirtying The Planet

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 194

Although we live in an age of austerity, and we're all understandably worried about the economy, we also have to consider the environment when it comes to our actions and what items we buy. Often, buying something that helps the environment is as cheap or even cheaper than normal household chemicals. Protecting the environment not only helps the planet, but also can improve your family's health and well being and work out cheaper in the long run.

When you select a household cleaner, pay close attention to the label and the contents of the product and the warnings associated with them. Often chemicals that are harmful to the environment are also harmful to humans, with their fumes being dangerous if inhaled in a confined area and the chemicals themselves acting as irritants if they come into contact with the skin. In addition to being harmful to people, they are hard to remove from water once they are poured down the drain and can harm fish and plant life.

There are alternatives and ways to keep the bathroom clean and safe without resorting to harmful chemicals. Instead of using bleach and bleach based cleaners when you come to clean your ceramics, bath and tiles look at using either vinegar or tea tree oil. Both of these are kinder to the ceramics and surfaces they come into contact with, can be breathed in more safely than ammonia and will get your surfaces sparkling clean while killing many germs and bacteria.

In addition to switching from bleaches and ammonia based cleaning products on things like tiling and your bath and toilet, also look to how you unblock problem sinks and drains: using a plunger instead of chemicals will often solve problems caused by matted hair and similar debris and when you have clogs that are caused by things like grease or accumulated liquids you may also remove these by putting some bicarbonate of soda down the drain. If the bicarbonate doesn't react and clear the clog by itself then add vinegar to it and this will release bubbles and fizzing that will clear away debris and allow water to flow again.

Bicarbonate of soda has other useful properties, too. It can help remove odours and it is a good way to clean tired grout and can absorb spills. Best of all it is safe to flush and won't poison the water.

As well as replacing chemicals with friendlier alternatives, also look at your habits as these can make a huge difference: allowing air into the bathroom through opening the window will keep the room smelling fresh and help to prevent the build up of mildew and odours. Similarly, letting sunlight in through the day acts as a disinfectant and will raise the temperature of the room. This, in turn, helps prevent things like mold and mildew.

As well as using air and sunshine, pay attention to the towels and bath mats. By keeping them dry and replaced regularly, you will prevent bacteria from breeding and keep your room smelling pleasant and safe for your family.
