The Value of Adjustable Basketball Hoops

May 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 179

While the height of a basketball hoop doesn't really matter to high school, college, or professional players, it does matter to children. Toddlers obviously need a mini hoop to shot on, and some children are ready to move on and shoot on a real hoop. This is where adjustable basketball systems really come in handy.

As children get older, their skills will continue to develop. Even when they are ready to shoot on an outdoor hoop with a real basketball, they still won't likely be able to shoot on a 10 foot rim. Even if they are able to get the ball up there, there range is very limited. Almost every hoop on the market today has a height adjustment feature.

The most common range of adjustment is 7.5 - 10 feet. Some do actually lower down to 6 feet, though they are typically a lot more expensive. Lowering the height allows young children to start shooting on a real hoop at a much earlier age.

It's important that children shoot at a height that is just right for them. If they are having trouble just getting the ball to the rim, then it's too high. The entry level hoops usually adjust in 6-inch increments. What's nice about some of the mid-to-upper level basketball hoops is that they adjust infinitely. So if a hoop adjusts between 7.5 and 10 feet, then you could obtain any height in that range. This gives you that many more options.

Once they reach the age of 10, they should be able to shoot at regulation height, or close to it. Portable or in-ground basketball systems are fine, since both will have a height adjustment feature.

Having an adjustable hoop is beneficial if you have several children in different age groups. For example, let's say one child is 6 and the other 10 years old. When the 6 year old is shooting, the hoop can be lowered to suit him or her. When the 10 year plays, it can be raised again. Of course, they both could play together on a lowered height as well.

Regardless of how old each family member is, an adjustable hoop allows everyone to get involved.

Another bonus with lowering a hoop is that kids can have some fun dunking. Most of us will never be able to dunk on a 10 foot hoop, so lowering makes it possible.

However, I would advise not lowering the hoop too often for this purpose; shooting on a 10 foot high rim will help them most with their development. That is the height they will be playing on once they begin organized basketball.
