Factors To Consider When Buying A Basketball Hoop For Kids

May 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

You can't go wrong with buying your kids a basketball hoop. It's a good way to get some exercise, improve their hand and eye coordination, and spend some time outdoors instead of playing video games or watching television. Buying a basketball hoop for children is a little different than buying one for adults. The following are some considerations before making a decision:

Easy Adjustment

Almost all hoops nowadays have an adjustment mechanism that can raise or lower the height. This feature is adored by children, because they can lower the hoop to dunk or make shots easier. However, some hoops are easier to adjust more than others. Look for hoops that have a handle or a crank that can easily be moved. You would definitely want to avoid the ratchet adjust systems, where a broomstick is required to do the adjusting. Adults can even find this challenging. Most entry level systems are easy enough for children to adjust.

Portable Systems

Getting a portable system might for the inside might not be a bad idea. Some are indeed capable of fitting inside a house, even ones that come with a base and a pole. You could also buy one that hangs on their wall. Even if your child is older, he or she still might like to have a toy hoop to play on. It gives them something to do when the weather outside doesn't cooperate, plus they are fun to play with. As an adult, I enjoy shooting on these hoops.

Inground Systems

Inground basketball systems are extremely stable. They can't be moved as easy as a portable, but they do perform better. Their durability is also superior. The portable systems have a base that can be punctured without much difficulty; an inground system doesn't have this problem.

A pole pad is usually sold separately, but I would recommend buying one. This is typically a vinyl-covered foam padding that wraps around your pole and prevents injuries by serving as a buffer between the players and pole.

The rule of thumb is pretty simple with inground systems. The quality of a hoop is largely determined by the size and material of the backboard. In other words, get the biggest and highest quality backboard that you can afford.

So, as a parent it is always important to consider these factors before buying kids basketball hoop. Establish a budget, and buy the system with the best backboard that you can buy.
