Pitching Machine Safety

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 202

Pitching machines are great training tools for coaches and players. The only problem is they can be a little bit dangerous while in use. To make sure you don't run into any problems when you are using them you should make sure you obey the following guidelines I put together.

1. Buy a pitching machine with an enclosed wheel. This is only possible if the pitching machine you need has one of these enclosed wheels. These types of machines are nice because they significantly reduce the chance of injury. With an enclosed wheel you can feel good about letting your children go outside and letting them feed the machine with friends. Some brands that have enclosed wheels include Heater, Cimarron, and Bata. These three manufacturers have very quality machines that you can use safely.

2. Stand off to the side of the machine when feeding. A lot of coaches like to stand behind the machine as it protects them from balls coming back right up the middle. The only problem with that is the pitching machine will get your shirt if you get to close. Standing off to the side prevents your shirt from getting caught.

3. Don't stick your hand through the chute. This one seems to be an obvious one but I've seen coaches put themselves at risk by doing this. If you put the ball in incorrectly, it may get stuck between the chute and the wheel. Instead of sticking your hand through and getting it, please turn the machine off! You could also try poking it with something. Just make sure you don't put your hand through, otherwise, you are going to have bigger problems.

4. Do not let kids feed the chute. A machine with an open wheel can be very dangerous if used by kids. It is recommended that an adult feeds the ball at all times.

5. Buy a ball feeder. A ball feeder comes in handy in two ways. The first one is that you can watch the batters while they are hitting. Without a ball feeder, you are too busy feeding the machine to make any fixes to the player's swing. The second reason for a ball feeder is for safety purposes. Most ball feeders hold anywhere from twelve to eighteen balls. This allows you to use the ball feeder to feed the machine instead of your hand. This will decrease the risk of injury.

6. Make sure you check to see if the machine is being shot correctly before the batter steps in. If the machine is pointed in the wrong direction by a couple inches, it could hit the batter. That is why it is best that you test the machine before you let the hitter step up to bat.

They come in handy during practice and even in games for machine pitch. You just always have to be careful when using the pitching machine because they are powerful.
