Pitching Equipment: Picking the Best

February 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

Pitching equipment is an essential part of helping a baseball pitcher complete his job successfully. Being a pitcher is among one of the hardest jobs in the world; not only do you need athletic and durable, but you also require the smarts, competitive nature and tough mentality that all World Series pitchers can claim. It can take a rare person to feature all of these traits, but they are all necessary to be a great pitcher.

Pitching is a unique position in the game of baseball. While a batter can practice every day in batting cages without experiencing strain, a pitcher can only go 100 percent every five days. As you cannot practice daily, you must take full advantage of your pitching equipment when you can.

Realize that training to become the best possible pitcher takes many hours of hard, dedicated work, meaning it is not a task that can be done overnight and meaning there is a considerable amount of energy required to make it happen. If you are interested in becoming a great pitcher, you must understand the commitment it requires, and you must take this commitment to heart, putting all of your effort into it.

The first -- and most important -- piece of pitching equipment is a good glove. Properties that make up a good glove include being between 11.5 and 12 inches in length. This size is suitable for hiding a baseball while still remaining small and light enough to keep out of the way. Keep in mind that some leagues prohibit mono-colored gloves while most others prohibit leather or white markings. These are good things to keep in mind when you are shopping for your pitcher's glove.

With the right pitching equipment and training, your skills will go a long way, performing great against hitters that spend their time with a batting machine or softball machines. The next important gear to pick up are cleats. Having a good set of cleats on you ensures that you can maintain the best grip on the pitcher's mound while still pushing off the rubber with the most force you possibly can.

Cleats can come in two types: metal and molded rubber. If you are in a league that permits it, choose metal; it allows you to dig out and mold the mound to your preference, and it offers better traction than rubber cleats -- you will not slip with it.

The final important piece of pitching equipment also coincides with your cleats. Anybody who has spent more than a few months pitching knows that the glove side cleat can take a rather large beating. After all, this is the cleat that slams into the ground during the follow through of the pitch. Without the proper care and attention dedicated to this cleat, the leather on the toe of the glove side cleat will tear apart, breaking open and exposing the skin, ultimately becoming useless.

To treat this, add Tuff Toe to your arsenal of pitching equipment. This is a rubbery substance that you can apply to the toe of your glove side cleat, and once it dries, it becomes a very hard plastic that essentially bonds together the leather and prevents it from tearing apart and exposing the skin. Adding this extra layer on your glove side cleat greatly extends the life of your cleats, saving you money all around.

These are the three primary items that will help you succeed in your hard work with training to become the next best thing on the mound. Remember that pitching is a very difficult task and that not everybody is cut out for it. However, with the right pitching equipment coupled with a good mentality, good durability and good athleticism, you will have all the tools you need to succeed.
