How Did the Texas Rangers Become One of Baseball's Best?

February 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

Spring optimism has already arrived in Arlington, Texas. ESPN recently issued their pre-season Future Power Rankings, and the Rangers placed first among all Major League Baseball teams. Many teams are now looking at the Rangers as the ultimate model of success. The question becomes, what did they do to earn this designation?

The Rangers have achieved their success by making shrewd decisions and from building from within. Their back to back World Series appearances and promising future are largely the result of smart management and developing a stellar coaching staff.

They stuck with Manager Ron Washington despite several situations that would have made it easy to let him go. Washington was recently signed to a contract extension that will likely make him the team's all-time leader in managerial wins.

They hired Mike Maddux as pitching coach a couple of years ago, and more recently, his Hall of Fame brother Greg. Maddux has helped the front office divert the club's attention away from power-hitting sluggers, and towards prolific young pitching.

The front office, led by Jon Daniels, has developed an impressive roster by engaging in advantageous trades and signings. Texas has acquired stars like Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, Elvis Andrus, and Neftali Feliz through trades. Additionally, they have wisely signed free agents such as Adrian Beltre, Colby Lewis, and Yu Darvish.

The team has emphasized scouting and player development, and stacked their minor league rosters with talented young prospects. The overwhelming majority of players on their Major League roster had to work their way up through the minor leagues.

Yet, as well as they have done, and as promising as their future might be, they still have never won a world series for Texas fans. Still, their wise moves should give Ranger fans hope that someday soon they will be able to celebrate a championship at Rangers Ballpark.

Chris Ray is a lifelong baseball fan, and enjoys watching the Texas Rangers roster on a regular basis from his season tickets at Rangers Ballpark.
