Too Tired To Enjoy Being Retired?

January 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 197

Complaints of being "too tired" are common in doctors' offices.

A long career of early rising, late nights, skipped meals, and neglected workouts leaves many of us too tired to enjoy our retirement years. This is assuming, of course, that we can afford to stop working.

(Fellow Boomer, if you are still working, you will benefit even more from reading this!)

Over the course of a working life, many of us pick up bad habits of eating and physical inactivity that cause us to gain weight. Weight gain can lead to diabetes, type 2, and this definitely puts a crimp in our energy supplies. Diabetes can be overcome, but the first step is to find the energy to get off the couch!

Those who face serious health problems need solutions that don't require them to totally end all their bad habits overnight. Experience has taught us that's not likely to happen!

For any major change to stick, there needs to be an incentive of feeling better immediately, so those folks have a reason to continue to make constructive changes in their routine.

Good habits need to be slowly substituted for bad ones. It doesn't work to simply end an unhealthy habit because that habit satisfies an important physical or emotional need. What I have found useful is to replace my unhealthy habits with healthy ones that fill the same need.

Then, you let the good new habit crowd out the old bad one.

For instance, you might replace cravings for sweets with a healthy, all natural, low sugar energy drink. This will give you the energy lift you crave, without the sugar crash. So, you get a new healthy habit that actually satisfies you better than your old familiar treat.

A well-chosen energy drink will give you nutrients that replenish your body's supplies of the chemicals necessary to generate energy. The caffeine of coffee or tea alone can't do this for you. Be careful, because not every energy drink will serve the purpose. Most are just mixtures of lots of caffeine, two ounces of sugar, and a few vitamins for window-dressing in a sixteen ounce can.

...Just More of the Same Stuff That Has Left You Too Tired!

The next step might be to take some of your newly rediscovered energy and go out for a brisk 40-minute walk. Start making this a daily habit. It will help you sleep better, which will do wonders for your energy levels by itself.

Starting a gentle, regular exercise program is also a great way to begin getting your weight, your blood pressure, and your cholesterol under control.

Another quick and easy step toward regaining your youthful energy and vibrancy is to start a quality program of nutritional supplementation. This should be a high-potency multivitamin/mineral blend, with some Omega-3 essential fatty acids. To really supercharge your depleted nutrition, start juicing vegetables and fruit, so you get the full range of live nutrients, undamaged by the heat of cooking.

Get more sunlight, too. It helps your body make Vitamin D the natural way, which gives your immune system as well as your emotional state a big boost.

After a month or so of this regimen, you should start seeing a difference in the way you feel. If you are feeling better, then it will only be natural to be drawn into doing more of the things that are making you feel good.

You can start working on replacing some of those unhealthy foods that were sapping your energy and replacing them with more natural, organic, non-processed foods.

As you start feeling better, you may want to see how good you can feel. If you are on any medications, see if your doctor thinks the doses may be lowered. It is quite possible you won't need them any more.

When you no longer are too tired, you'll be ready to enjoy your retirement years.
