Protest This

We baby boomers were at it again, rising in protest against the Man, showing our rage against the machine. This time we brought our sons and daughters along to the show.

We're mellowing a little over time. The sixties saw us rising up against the dominant political issues of the time - the war in Viet Nam, and segregation. Last year it was Wall Street. And consistent with our past, we were protesting against inequities and ineptitude. Back then it was racial inequities and governmental ineptitude. Last year it was both governmental ineptitude combined with corporate malfeasance, and the gross inequities of our financial system.

The protests were aimed squarely at Wall Street and were happening both online and on the Street itself. Groups were using the web to rally and organize. In Manhattan, hundreds of protesters went theatrical in front of the New York Stock Exchange, dressed as zombies and holding handfuls of fake money. Similar events happened in Chicago, Boston, St. Louis, Kansas City and L.A.

The people were rising up - power to the people. Interestingly enough, not all of these demonstrators were baby boomers, although many of them were. Middle age workers who have been laid off - after seeing their retirement savings vanish in a cloud of greed - were rightfully angry and seriously committed to letting the Street know about it. Recent college grads who are now mired in education loans but who can't find jobs are also angry and were also showing it.

The general consensus of these people was that the power of Washington has been corrupted and usurped by the power of Wall Street. Without making judgments on political issues such as this, you still must agree that perception is reality and a growing number of people are beginning to feel this way, some very passionately. There's clearly a movement here, and if anything, it's picking up steam.

Interestingly enough, it was upheavals like these that brought down several regimes in the Middle East over the summer. The lesson is that you can't ignore the masses. When social inequities or governmental ineptitude reach unacceptable levels, the public reacts. It happened overseas and now it appears as though it could happen here as well.

Was this phenomenon a threat to our government as a whole or to the rule of law? Probably not. But it is a clear indication to Wall Street and the government at large that we the people are no longer willing to accept the status quo of our financial system. Nor should we. Indeed, this might well be another early sign of the massive wealth transfer that is happening over the next few years and that is already underway.

The take away point here is that our financial system is under scrutiny. Investment strategies that were sound 10 years ago are today outdated. A portfolio that is not diversified and hedged with investment instruments beyond paper money and the stock market is at risk. In short, it's time to reconsider all aspects of your money and your financial future.

The people are speaking. It's time for us all to rise up, and take back control of our own financial destinies.
