Navigating The Job Market After Age Fifty

March 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

Employment Challenges For People Over 50

Looking for another job, especially after a job loss, can be stressful for anybody. It seems to be particularly tough for older folks. It is a bit harder for older folks to be flexible when looking for their next job. Many do not wish to relocate, start a new career, or accept a much lower salary.

After spending 20 or 30 years in one field, we probably assumed we could coast until retirement. That may have been true at one time. However, unemployment for older workers is still higher than the national unemployment average. Lots of older workers need to find new jobs. Most of them need to find those jobs quickly too, but seem to be facing a hard challenge.

Bias Against Older Workers

This is not all the fault of the older workers either. Many hiring managers do not really want to hire a person who is older, and more experienced, than they are. They have a built in bias against hiring people over 50, no matter how qualified the job applicants are. They may also believe that older workers do not have updated skills. Even though age discrimination is not legal, it still exists. You may not have to put your age on a resume, but it will not be hard to guess when you show up at the interview.

Combat Age Bias With Flexibility

Bias may exist, but that does not mean you have no way to combat it. You simply need to present yourself as somebody who does not fit into the hiring manager's picture of an older worker. You may need to be willing to do things differently in order to land a good job.

Your resume needs to be updated. I learned how to construct my first resume about 30 years ago. Believe me when I tell you that the rules for writing an effective resume have changed a lot! If you cannot figure out how to build your own effective resume and cover letter, you may want to invest in a good resume writing service. Do not assume that the old rules still apply at all!

You may really not want to relocate because you already have your home and family in one city or town. There may be things you just do not want to be flexible about. If so, you need to figure out what you can change.

If you have been turned down because your skill set has not been updated for the last decade, it is time to figure out how you can improve your situation. Would an online class help you get current skills? If not, would you be willing to accept a lower starting salary in exchange for on the job training?

These may seem like hard questions and hard choices. However, if you have been looking for a job, without much luck, you already know you need to do something differently. You do not have to change everything, but maybe you should start by changing something so you can have a better chance to land a good job!

Get some great ideas for fast job training so you can land your next good job. Stop by the Over 50 website for more tips about a happy baby boomer experience too.
