June 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 173

If your or a close family member require care, a geriatric care manager may be a good choice for you. A geriatric care manager is a specialist in health and human services. They are usually trained in such things a nursing, social work, psychology and other specialties with a focus on issues related to aging and elder care.

These types of professionals can help assist with disabilities as well as those with chronic needs as a result of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson or other types of dementia. Most geriatric care managers are members of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers and you can usually check them out through the organization before making a hiring decision.

The first step to hiring geriatric care manager is to find one. Through the same professional organization you can also find the "Find a Care Manager" portal on their site. Simple click on this link and enter the parameters for your particular situation. You will get a list of geriatric care managers in your area that meet your needs.

The next step is whittling down the list to the person that will be a good fit for you and your needs or your family members needs. Anyone who may be in the home with an elderly person who might no have the ability to care for themselves must be checked out thoroughly. Hiring someone to care for the elderly is no different than hiring someone to care for small children. People who are defenseless you have to be sure are in excellent hands.

Call the geriatric care manager that are on your list and ask questions. You should prepare ahead of time and know what you want to ask so you don't get sidetracked in the conversation. Write down any special needs the person you are calling about has and discuss those with the geriatric care givers. You will probably find some that have extensive experience with exactly the disease your family member is dealing with.

The ones who seem like they would be the best fits you should ask for references on. Check the references don't just ask for them, write them down and never think about them. Make the phone calls to each reference and be diligent.

Geriatric care mangers are the right choice to make when you just don't feel equipped to manage the type of care that is needed for you loved one. If it seems the problems and challenges that you are meeting with your loved ones keep getting bigger it is probably time to seek out some outside help to get you some relief and get your loved one the care they need.

You will find that most geriatric care managers are extremely professional and loving in the work they do. They deal with disabilities, end of life issues and certain diseases on a daily basis. They not only know the medical hurdles that need to be met but also the emotional and physical ones to keep your loved ones well cared for.

Once you have made a selection amongst the geriatric care managers you reviewed it is time to start building a successful and open relationship with that person. It is so important that you have an open and effective communication with this person to be sure that your loved one receives the right care. If you don't have this kind of communication with your care manager it is a recipe for trouble.

Your geriatric care managers should always be available to answer questions and keep you in the loop on what is going on and what needs to happen going forward for ongoing care. If you are using an agency to hire you may find that you have multiple care givers coming in and out. If any of them make you feel uncomfortable in any way ask that they are taken off your rotation.

Having a geriatric care manager helping with your loved on should take a lot of the stress off of you. No more having to worry if what you are doing is really the best for your loved ones or if you are following the doctor's orders correctly or not sleeping for days keeping up with a job and an aging relative.

Geriatric care managers make it easier for your loved one to get the care they need and for you to be able to help care for them without your whole life having to fall apart to do it. The fees you will have to pay to get this type of care will depend on many circumstances. You may have coverage that will cover it and you may not but you should find out the answers to those questions ahead of time so you know what you can manage to get the help you need.
