Baby Boomers, Are You Living In The Past?

February 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

The Baby Boomer generation is defined by its music. Although some people will inevitably argue this, in the generations before and after the boomers, the music was more or less characterized by a style or a sound. Yes, there are lots of good musicians and good bands in every generation, but not many icons.

The Boomers on the other hand, have not only icons by the dozen, but songs those icons made that to this day define us. It's not really even all that much of an argument. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Cream-the list goes on and on and on. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton-same thing, the list goes on and on.

And how about the song titles that define us? Born To Run, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Respect, My Generation - same thing once again, the list goes on and it's a long one.

Some songs though, even if they weren't huge and iconic, still serve to define not only what we were, but what we are now as well. Take Living in the Past, by Jethro Tull. It's a great song, and to a large degree, defines us to this day.

The reason of course is that many Baby Boomers are doing just that - living in the past. That's a shame, because like it or not, the past is gone forever. We live in a new world today, a world that few of us ever thought we'd encounter back when we were collectively young and planning our individual futures.

Let's face it - the world has changed. The concept of one job per career went away a long time ago. Most of us have had many jobs over the past twenty or thirty years or so. The notion of a solid retirement portfolio, anchored by a home that is worth many times what we paid for it has been replaced by the reality that many of us owe more on our homes than they are currently worth.

The economy is now global, and presently it's in pretty bad shape. We are worried about an unemployment rate that is almost double what it used to be, and many facts point to the conclusion that this may become our new reality. Companies have learned how to do more with less, and an expensive domestic labor market has been replaced by overseas workers who work for very low wages.

Those jobs are lost, pretty much forever, and until the domestic workforce retrains in other skills, they will remain unemployed.

Baby Boomers therefore need to realize that it's never again going to be like it was. Our dreams have been replaced by the new reality. But is that a problem? Not necessarily.

It clearly is a problem if you continue to hold on to the past, and refuse to let it go. It's a problem if you expect to continue on the path you were on, and fail to make course adjustments.

But if you embrace these changes as your new reality, and vow to make the best of them, your life will actually improve. The new reality translates into massive opportunity. All you need to do is to be able to spot them and then goad yourself into taking action.
