Aging Parents Still Driving

January 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

As the boomer population continues to age, the looming problem of elderly drivers will only get worse. Now we certainly understand that people need the independence that driving affords us, but when does it become unsafe for the rest of us and how do families confront the situation that their parent is endangering themselves as well as others on the road?

This is a difficult conundrum for many families every day and although there is no clear answer, families need to consider the consequences of not taking some kind of action.

First and foremost, if your parent is in an accident due to the effects of aging, there is a good chance they will also involve another motorist with the possibility of injuring or killing that other person and themselves. Secondly, can your aging parent afford the legal expense for hitting someone else? If your parent is injured, are you prepared to move them into your home, or can they afford to live in a care facility until healed? How would you feel if another aging driver killed your spouse, child, or other loved one in a car accident? It's not really an accident if you do nothing to prevent this for your parents.

Every family situation is different due to the varying relationships within the family and the attitude of the aging parent. Some families may be able to perform some type of intervention in a loving way that helps the parent come to a new realization of their driving skills, while other families may not be effective due to the stubbornness of the parent. The latter is very common and there are two options: do nothing and hope for the best, or, find another way that works for everybody.

Just taking the keys from them is usually not an option that works well, and in some states may be considered elder abuse. Think carefully and do your homework before taking action. At the first concern that arises about your parents' driving, perhaps a fender bender or a traffic ticket, talk with them caringly about your concerns. When was the last time they had an eye exam? Does their doctor have any concerns about them driving? Taking this direction can be very effective. A doctor has the ability to tell your parent they should not be driving and although the doctor can't take the keys away either, your parent will probably listen to their doctor about this better than they will listen to you.

If your parent is involved in an accident, do you have their emergency medical and insurance information to relate to the emergency room workers? This information could save their life.

Ride along with your parent frequently to assess their driving for yourself. Does the thought of this scare you? Start the process! Are your knuckles white when you arrive back? Start the process!

If you don't take action for their safety, do it for everybody else on the road.
