First Birthday Party Tips

Though your baby may be too young to notice, he's turning one! Time for a major celebration! Hold off on renting the ponies, bringing the circus to town or renting out the amusement park. As exciting as this milestone is, babies are really too young to appreciate a huge bash. Here are some tips for throwing a fun, age appropriate party for your one year old.

  • Plan it right: Make sure your baby will be well rested and in a good mood. Starting right after morning nap time is usually a good idea. Plan to have the party last around 1-1 1/2 hours. You don't want the birthday child to be too overwhelmed.
  • The Guests: Keep the guest list to a minimum. To avoid stranger anxiety, only invite people who your baby knows. If you invite playmates stick to 5 kids or less.
  • Themes: Though baby may not realize what is going on, you may find it easier to plan the party once you have a theme. It can be as simple as polka dots, stripes, the babies initial or age. For boys you can do a transportation theme (planes, trains & cars), sports, cowboys or monkeys. If you have a girl you can use butterflies, flowers, princesses or ladybugs. Once you have a theme use it for your invitations, paper goods, decorations, and thank you cards. Another idea is to celebrate your child - make a mounted board of your child's month by month development. Show some infant pictures. Everyone will love to see how much baby grew up the past year.
  • Where to do it: The baby will probably feel most comfortable if you do the party at home. If your house can't handle the party you can try child friendly restaurants, low key party rooms or, if the weather agrees, a nice, outdoor park.
  • Entertainment: Once again, you want to keep it simple. You can have everyone sing the babies favorite songs with him. If you are inviting playmates take out some age appropriate toys. Keep in mind that children this age are not the best sharers. Don't leave out a toy that everyone will fight over. Think mega blocks, oversized trucks or stuffed animals.
  • What to Serve: Remember to cater to the birthday boy and his friends! You can serve graham crackers, animal crackers, mini soft sandwiches, soft chicken nuggets and cut up fruit.
  • Safety: If you are inviting the baby's playmates you want to make sure your house has no choking hazards lying around. Do not use latex balloons. Child proof your home by removing all breakables (though you probably did that when your child started crawling!) Put up safety gates by the stairs.
  • Day of the Party: Designate someone to take pictures so you don't miss a single shot and you're not stuck behind the camera. Consider inviting your child's favorite babysitter, so she can take your child out to a quiet room if your baby gets overwhelmed. Dress your child in an adorable birthday dress or outfit and take pictures before the party! Be calm and relaxed and your guests are sure to have a great time!
