How to...Enjoy the Rain with Sign Language!

Last week my children and I had a lot of rain in the Los Angeles area. Now, we like to think that "sunny" weather is normal in this area, so when it starts to rain a lot of us like to stay indoors, away from the cold and damp weather. But even when it is raining, there are a lot of fun and exciting things to do outside that you and your children can explore!

Experienced signers (and even those just starting out) and their little ones will have a lot of fun with this rainy day activity. When it is raining outside, how about taking a walk with your little signer?

But first, before you go outside be sure to pick up an UMBRELLA and your rain boots. Teach your little one(s) to sign UMBRELLA while the two of you are getting ready to go outside. Remember to make the sign with your fingers first and then have him or her repeat the sign.

After you go outside, you can sign RAIN. The best way to do this is to take a break and sing and sign the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" song. By singing this popular children's song, your child will enjoy herself and it will be a great way to learn the sign for RAIN as well.

Then after you have been outside for a while, and if you two are wearing rain boots, you two can jump and make fun splashes in the puddles! If your little signer gets WET, you can show him or her how to sign WET.

After the two of you return home, look at your socks and feet. If your SOCKS are wet from splashing in the puddles, you can show your little one the sign for SOCKS.

Here is a challenge: You can also sign WET SOCKS if your feet got wet from the puddles! Combine the signs for WET and SOCKS to get WET SOCKS. Then make sure to change out of your WET SOCKS as soon as possible to warm them up.

At a park or around the block--no matter where you go, do not forget to keep repeating the signs so both you and your child can practice. This rainy day activity is the best way to get some fresh air, to enjoy nature...and to learn some new FUN signs!
