Bath Time for Toddlers – What Parents Need to Know

October 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 147

Announcing bath time can cause joyful giggles in one toddler and shrieks of fear in another. Bath time can be tons of fun and is a great boredom buster. During the winter we spend tons of time in the tub, while during the summer we squeeze it in quickly before bedtime.

Here are some tips to keep in mind before you start the bath:

  • For young toddlers put them in a bath seat for safety. Once they outgrow it be sure to purchase a non slip mat.
  • Water should be waist high (when they are in a sitting position).
  • Make sure the water is warm, but not too hot. Use your elbow to test the water, as it is more sensitive than your fingers. Mix the water around to make sure that there are no hot areas.
  • Bubble baths should be used sparingly. They may cause rashes or urinary tract infections.
  • Be sure you have everything you need in the bathroom before you put the baby in the tub. Bring in the cordless phone or let the machine pick up your calls. Experts caution that you should never to leave your child alone in the bath until they reach age 6.

Here are some ideas for making bath time fun!

  • Your toddler will love to draw on the tub using bath crayons. You can even read him some books and have him illustrate pictures based on the story.
  • Get them some special bath toys such as washcloth puppets, boats, water guns, rubber ducky, bubbles and beach pails.
  • Purchase a small fishing net and tell him to catch his toys.
  • Give your toddler a washcloth and play Simple Simon Says. Tell him what to scrub – “Simple Simon says clean your knees.”
  • No need to spend money on bath toys! Your kids will have a blast with measuring cups, plastic cups and bowls. Toddlers love to pour water from cup to cup.

While most toddlers love the bath, there are plenty of tots who develop a fear of bathing. My oldest child was petrified of the bath. We bathed her in a baby tub for the longest time. She never really outgrew her fear of water. She refused to go into a wading pool and did not learn how to swim until she was 9. We tried all the tricks in the book, some worked and some didn’t. If your child is going through the stage check out our tips below. Each child has their own personalities and temperaments so see what works for you!

  • If something recently happened, such as slipping in the tub, reassure him. Tell him that you will be right there and will make sure it doesn’t happen again.
  • Sometimes children are afraid of being sucked down the drain. Explain to him that only water goes down but you will take him out before draining the water.
  • Make bath time extra special by giving him toys that are only for the bath.
  • Try giving him a shower. The idea of being big like Mommy or Daddy might get him into the tub.
  • Have an older sibling go in with him to calm his fears..
  • If the thought of getting water in his eyes is causing him to balk, give him a pair of water goggles to wear while being shampooed.

Toddlers shouldn’t be in the tub for more than 10-15 minutes. You do not want to dry out their sensitive skin. Encourage them to clean up their bath toys before you drain the water. Wrap your child in a soft warm bath towel. Inhale the delicious scent of your freshly bathed toddler. Ahh… the joys of parenting.
