Why Grand Canyon Airplane Tours Are So Popular

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

Grand Canyon airplane tours give you a terrific way to see one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. And they simply can't be beat if you don't have a lot of free time but you still want to see this magnificent canyon. As you fly over the canyon, you'll have an absolutely spectacular view. You'll also see much more of the canyon from a plane than you would on any other type of tour.

The Grand Canyon covers about 1,900 square miles and is the largest canyon in the world. It's an enormous gash in the Earth's surface about 190 miles long and about 1 mile deep, on the average. Its size isn't the only thing that makes it interesting, though. When you see it, you'll understand how truly powerful erosion can be. It took the Colorado River two billion years to carve the Grand Canyon out of the surrounding rock.

Many of the canyon features you'll see during one of these plane rides are named for mythological or historical figures. Wotan's Throne, the Cheops Pyramid, the Isis Temple and the Brahma Temple are just a few examples. You'll see multiple layers of rock (strata) from different geological eras and fly over the ruins of the Native American dwellings left behind by the tribes that once inhabited the canyon area.

Most Grand Canyon plane rides fly over the West and South Rims. The South Rim is 270 miles east of Las Vegas, in the center of northern Arizona. The direct flight from Las Vegas to the South Rim arrives at Grand Canyon National Park in about 45 minutes.

Tour planes typically have large windows to provide unobstructed views, and the cabins are large and comfortable. There are only two ways to tour the South Rim from Las Vegas - by airplane or motor coach. This canyon rim is known for the spectacular vistas that can be seen from Yaki Point, Mather Point and Hermit's Rest. South Rim Grand Canyon airplane tours return to Las Vegas early enough to leave you plenty of time for gambling, shows or shopping.

The West Rim is closer to Las Vegas than the South Rim; it's only about 120 miles away. Located within the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the West Rim is a short distance from the National Park and is the home of the fabulous Grand Canyon Skywalk (also called the "Glass Bridge"). It's also the only place you can catch a helicopter flight to the canyon floor. Plane rides over the West Rim's towering spires, buttes and cliffs are simply spectacular.

During your flight to the canyon, you'll see various area landmarks, too. Lake Mead, for example, is the country's largest man-made reservoir, and Hoover Dam is the country's second-largest dam. You'll also fly over the Colorado River, Rainbow Gardens and extinct volcanoes. It's an exceptional flight, and one you shouldn't miss.

A Grand Canyon airplane tour is a fabulous way to explore this scenic wonder, and you'll get the best view of it, too. In fact, you'll see many sights that people on the ground cannot. This is one of the most beautiful places in the U.S., and with more than five million visitors every year it's a top vacation spot. The canyon's popularity makes it important to book your airplane tour in advance.
