Runaway FAA Budget, Lobbyists, and Now Over the Top User Fees

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 194

We have a huge problem with the FAA - Federal Aviation Administration, as it seems they want to micro-manage aviation to the point of killing it, seriously it is that bad, worse we currently have an administration which wishes to tax the rich by imposing luxury tax law type penalties on those who own and fly private aircraft or corporate type jets. This has had a chilling effect on the industry even if most of the proposed taxes have not gone into effect yet.

Still, the Obama Administration proposes a "use tax" set of fees for anyone who flies, or uses the airspace or airports under FAA control. The theory here would be that the FAA pays for itself, but in reality the FAA has been so burdened with bureaucracy, self-imposed government regulation, and costs with new hardware purchases that it's in a financial world of hurt.

It seems like whenever the Federal Aviation Administration awards funds to any regional or large airport, it always comes with stipulations that if the airport takes the money, they have to put in so many environmental controls, or build out the airport in such a way that the upgrades are consistent with the rules regulations of every federal agency under the sun. By the time this is done, there isn't much money left over for what the federal funds being granted were to be used for the first place - the money spent just continues to increase.

Another problem I see is that often government contractors convince their politicians to vote for new contracts so they can get business, and then those lobbyists give more money to the politicians and they can get reelected to bring home even more bacon for their constituents, government contractor campaign contributors, and whatever region of the country they're from. And all of this wasteful spending, well, it has to come from somewhere you know, like us taxpayers. Or in this case in the future, it's going to come from user fees, meaning they will probably kill general aviation to pay for all this wasteful spending. It's a total travesty.

In my humble opinion, and as the coordinator for a think tank, I see the FAA as having become too large, too bureaucratic, and way over budget. It's grown to epic proportions, and the blob of bureaucracy needs to be stopped. They've made it tough on individuals that own aircraft with so many rules and regulations that they have retarded innovation in this sector, killing tens of thousands of jobs from aircraft manufacturing to general aviation service companies.

It's just horrible what has happened. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this, and if you'd like to discuss it please shoot me an e-mail, and no I don't want the job, my grandfather worked for the FAA, I know of the reality there.
