Reasons to Take A Grand Canyon South Rim Airplane Tour

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 146

If you're looking for the best way to capture the true essence of the Grand Canyon - especially the southern portions - taking a South Rim airplane tour is the best way to go. This type of plane ride lasts about 40 minutes and will show you the magnificence of the canyon in a way that seeing it from the ground simply cannot.

Most South Rim airplane tours will pick you up at your hotel and transport you to the airport in a well-appointed motor coach. After you're aboard your plane, you'll fly to the South Rim of the National Park. The round-trip flight takes less than an hour, so you'll have plenty of time for other activities while you're in the area.

The planes used for these aerial tours are spacious and comfortable, enabling you to truly enjoy the spectacular vistas you'll see once you arrive at the canyon's South Rim. These 17-seat aircraft are also designed specifically for sightseeing and come with oversized viewing windows. Your plane ride will include a 4,000-foot descent to the floor of the canyon. Once you land, you'll be able to walk around.

Airplane tours are terrific because they let you see so many of the famous features that have made the National Park such a popular tourist destination. Once your flight takes off from nearby Grand Canyon Airport (GCA), you'll hear a fascinating in-flight narration that will give you interesting background information and other facts about what you're seeing. This informative narrative will help you enjoy the spectacular sights even more.

Zuni Point, for example, is a striking, instantly recognizable plateau with cacti growing here and there. The point where the Colorado River and the Little Colorado River meet, called the Colorado Confluence, is equally impressive.

You'll fly close to a feature called the Desert View Watchtower, which is a faithful recreation of an actual prehistoric Native American tower. The famous, rainbow-colored Painted Desert will also come into view over your plane's wings. And, you'll see stunning aerial views of the nearby Petrified Forest.

As your plane is flying over the Navajo Reservation, you'll hear some interesting historical information. You'll then head for the legendary Temple Butte of the Grand Canyon. Most South Rim airplane tours will also take you to the fabulous North Rim. From there, you'll soar over the Kaibab Plateau and the Kaibab National Forest. In case you're wondering, "Kaibab" is a Native American word that means "mountain lying down."

After leaving the Kaibab region, your plane will return to the canyon region and fly over Imperial Point, the canyon's highest point of elevation. You will also be treated to aerial views of the Dragon Corridor, which is the widest, deepest, and most open section of the Park.

Without a doubt, a plane ride over the South Rim and other nearby sights is one of the most thrilling adventures you could take while you're in the Grand Canyon area. Actually, it might be one of the most memorable experiences you could find anywhere in the world.
