New Aerodynamic Design - Morphing Fuselage Strakes On Aircraft Fuselage for Prop Torque Air Flows

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 249

There are indeed lots of positive reasons for a propeller driven aircraft to have the motor in the front, rather than the rear. After all, it does provide airflow over the control surfaces. Unfortunately, on takeoff all that torque plus the circular airflows around the fuselage can also play havoc on horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and it also puts a lot of force and airflow on the wings causing the aircraft to roll. Okay so, you already know all that, but I ask; is there a way we can fix this problem?

Can we devise a way to cause that air to stop rotating around the fuselage and modify the slipstream; especially on takeoff? I believe the answer is yes, and we may be able to do more in the future than we ever have in the past due to the availability now with morphing materials. If we could fix this problem, aircraft could be safer in slow flight, and on takeoff, therefore more stable in the most critical times of flight. Now then, after considering this for a little while, let me go ahead and propose a new concept for you.

Have you ever looked inside of a washing machine at the way the centerpiece fins are designed in a wavy fashion? Well, what if we carefully finessed that slipstream torque corkscrew of airflow using ribbed-like wavy protrusions working in unison coming off of the fuselage causing the airflow back against the other side of the vertical stabilizer and horizontal stabilizers? And what if these protrusions had haptics sensors and could change the waviness allowing those fins to morph as needed then we wouldn't have the problems later as the aircraft sped up.

Obviously, the slipstream torque corkscrew airflow becomes elongated as the aircraft speeds up because it doesn't have time to circumnavigate the fuselage as many times based on the propeller speed. Also, as the pitch control of the propeller changes and takes less of a bite out of the relative wind it thus, produces a lessened affect. Therefore the wavy morphing strakes would simply retract back into the fuselage body as the aircraft sped up.

This may sound quite difficult from an aerodynamic an engineering standpoint, but it's really not, as a matter of fact we already have all of the math, and wind tunnel testing to design something like this on a CADCAM machine, then make it, and then go test it. All we need is the Morphing materials allowing us to do this.

It would help safety, airflow, and therefore make these aircraft more efficient as well. Redirecting the airflows to use at our advantage makes all the sense in the world. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
