Gardermoen Airport

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 217

A visit to Oslo Norway requires international air travelers to land at Gardermoen Airport, just outside the city of Oslo. Oslo is an exquisite European city that magically couples over a thousand years of history with modern business and functions. Known for its unique offerings of culture, arts, extraordinary architecture, both old and new, and beautiful scenery of the areas fjords, Oslo is a great destination for vacationing travelers. A variety of full service hotels are located directly adjacent to Gardermoen Airport and provide for the perfect lodging location for visitors of Oslo and surrounding areas. Hotels are available to fit every budget and were designed to keep with the look and feel of the Gardermoen Airport. Some of the hotels are well positioned for short walks to both the international and domestic terminals.

Traveling from Gardermoen Airport into Oslo and around Oslo is easy with the extensive public transportation system comprised of the Oslo Tramway and Oslo Commuter Rail. This public transportation system operates throughout the city, metro area and extends into suburbs to make Oslo quick and easy to navigate by public transportation. The high-speed Gardermoen Line links the Gardermoen Airport with the city center quickly and easily for foreign travelers.

When flying into Oslo, the Gardermoen Airport serves as the international and the domestic hub for Norway. This state of the art and modern airport houses two playgrounds for children, over 20 restaurants and cafes, retail stores and banking financial institutions and boasts the largest duty-free shop in Europe. The large iconic sculpture by Kare Groven, Utkast joyfully welcomes visitors to the airport and sets the stage that Gardermoen is not a common modern airport. Gardermoen showcases Norwegian art including sculptures, textiles, ceramics, glass etchings and even poetry engraved on the floor to welcome visitors with old Norwegian sayings. One gets a sense when walking through Gardermoen Airport, less that it is a busy international airport, and more that it is a place of art and wonder. Even the drinking fountains are works of art, and travelers often mistake them as such.

Oslo is located at the end of the Oslofjord and is surrounded by mountains, rolling green hills and beautiful waterways. The city of Oslo prides itself on open park spaces within the city limits including the centrally located Frogner Park, just a few blocks from the city center. World renowned Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland's Vigeland Sculpture Park in Frogner Park is a must see for visitors as it features over 200 granite and bronze sculptures woven into the vast and lush gardens Frogner Park is famous for.

Oslo is a great combination historical architecture and new modern urban architecture giving it a feel of no other city in the world. As a city rich in history, museums are plentiful and diverse. From great masterpieces housed in the National Museum galleries to the Oslo City Museum that highlights the history of Oslo and its people, there are museums and art galleries around the city to interest everyone.

There are many modern airports across the world; however few capture the creativity, diverse history and culture, and passion that Norwegians possess. Travelers know they are in for a great vacation when landing at Gardermoen Airport, the gateway to Oslo and Norway.

If you plan a visit to Norway and Gardermoen Airport, then you will find a lot of good and useful information at my website, regarding currency, hotels, car-rental but also a brief history of the airport itself.
