Box Kite Personal Flying Device With Canards and Prop Trust Vectoring Pivoting Motor Mounts

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 214

Not long ago, I wrote a piece on designing a personal flying craft which would basically be a box kite that someone stood inside of with a propeller in the back for thrust. When it took off they would take off at a 45° angle just as if you are flying a box kite on a string. Now then, I would like to talk to you for a moment about this concept and added some additional features.

For instance, the personal flying craft pilot should be able to use at least minimal thrust vectoring by having the motor mounts on a swivel which allowed vertical and horizontal access movement along a ball. In this case it would be quite maneuverable and steerable. Likewise the pilot of such a craft could use their arms to move protruding canards, and protruding horizontal stabilizers which could use elevator-ailerons, while using their feet for thrust vectoring of the small motor on the motor mounts.

Perhaps a larger version could have a hexagon shape with six box kites as part of the system, where the pilot flew in the middle and was able to move the boxes as needed for steering. If you are finding it difficult to visualize what I'm saying, then perhaps you might draw out six box kites in a circle all connected in a hexagon shape, with an aft motor facing backwards and the human pilot in the center. This would also be a safe design if it were to crash because it would crumple around the pilot sparing them.

Now then, obviously the concept of using box kite structures is nothing new. Prior to World War I many of the aircraft designs incorporated box kite wings, control surfaces, and stabilizers. This allowed them to provide for a strong structure, and all the services they needed to fly and control themselves. Still, other designs seem to have come along sense, and proven themselves to be worthy. Especially because they can hold more weight, travel at higher speeds, and therefore do more things.

However, with the advent of all these new light weight materials for the structural components, and carbon nano-tubes, and graphene coatings for the actual surfaces it would seem that if we went back to the drawing board and made some of those old aircraft designs using box kite structures that they would be well suited for personal flying craft.

Remember, back in the day they had very heavy engines, and today we have very light engines with an abundance of power. If you start adding in all these latest technologies, these flying craft could be very small, very light, safe, highly maneuverable, and thus, perfect for a personal flying craft. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
