After watching my mother spend years of her life over, under, and mistreated for a variety of health issues, I began to question the tendency to focus on treating the symptoms of illness, rather than the underlying issues. My curiosity led me to the field of acupuncture, but I am a skeptic by nature and, like many of you out there, could not imagine how simply placing a few thin needles in the body could possibly have any sort of effect. Oddly enough, the incident that really shaped my respect for the power of acupuncture was receiving a bad treatment from a practitioner. During this session the practitioner overtreated me and I developed a migraine. When I complained, she adjusted the treatment and the migraine disappeared...within seconds. It was at that point that I realized just how powerful this mysterious medicine can be. I attended the New England School of Acupuncture, the oldest acupuncture school in the US, and took advantage of every opportunity to expand my skills throughout my education. During my graduate study I visited Japan to study Shakuju (a non-insertive form of treatment); I spent time in the Dominican Republic working in an AIDS clinic, and I even studied facial rejuvenation acupuncture. I feel lucky to have studied with such brilliant minds; many of the staff at New England School of Acupuncture are pioneers in the field, people who are changing the face of acupuncture right now.
